Záměl – Trails, Nature and Local History

Záměl combines a distinctive walking tradition with natural and cultural themes that can be explored independently. The town is particularly well illustrated by the Planetární stezka, established in 2011: it leads from an inn on the outskirts of Záměl via the Panna Marie Bolestná forest spring to Potštejn, and then along an asphalt road to the Nad Merklovicemi crossroads. The route is approximately six kilometres long. It therefore offers a clearly described excursion with different sections of trail, a spring and another destination outside Záměl.

The Planetární stezka and the springs of Záměl

The Planetární stezka is one of the town’s defining experiences. Its route connects the outskirts of Záměl with Potštejn and then continues to Nad Merklovicemi. The Panna Marie Bolestná forest spring is one of the points along the route. Those wishing to understand the character of the trail will therefore find not only an approximate length, but also a specific sequence consisting of an inn, a forest spring, Potštejn and an asphalt road. The Putování ke Studánkám tradition complements this spring theme in a special way: it was revived in Záměl in 2003 and takes place on 1 May as a group walk to the local springs.

Cultural monument and stories of the town

Záměl’s cultural profile includes the former Hostinec u Karla IV. It is Záměl’s only cultural monument. At the Hostinec u Karla IV., the entrance gate and the thatched roof were repaired. The main room also contains an original bread oven. These details in particular make the building understandable as a historical point of reference, without equating its former character as an inn with present-day use.

Another story is told by the Lípa vorařů. It is associated with the construction of rafts in its surroundings and their transport along the Orlice and the Labe as far as Hamburg. The tree thus points to a connection between local work and a far-reaching transport route. The Kostelík sv. Marka also forms part of the town’s landmarks: it stands on Marek Hill. At a spring below the hill stands the figure of Hastrmanka Manka.

Nature reserve and natural garden

The Zámělský borek nature reserve lies near Záměl. Its characteristic habitat includes heat-loving grasslands and forest edges with several rare plant and animal species. The natural area thus represents a landscape in which open areas and wooded edges can be considered together. Another aspect is the Zahrada Dobromysl, which received a natural garden certificate in 2020. The public also took part in its garden therapy programmes, lectures and workshops.

Important for your planning: there is no ticket office at Záměl railway station; passengers’ tickets are sold on the train.
