Rohenice

Rohenice's character is shaped by sacred art, wooden architecture and landscape. The filial church of St. John the Baptist dates from the 14th century and preserves a rare Late Gothic winged altarpiece from 1533. Outside the church grounds, a wooden bell tower stands in the open space in front of the western main façade. For a trip with a range of interests, this creates a varied way to discover the town: you can combine architectural history, art and rural character without losing sight of the surrounding area.

Church, altarpiece and bell tower

The Church of St. John the Baptist is Rohenice's most prominent cultural landmark. Its history dates back to the 14th century; inside is the Late Gothic winged altarpiece from 1533. The considerable time gap between the construction of the church and the altarpiece makes the site a place where several eras can be traced. The bell tower complements this ensemble, but it is not within the church grounds; instead, it stands outside in the open space in front of the western main façade. It was built before 1652. This precise spatial separation is part of the distinctive appearance of the place and should be taken into account when finding your way around.

Further traces of rural culture

Another visible testament to Rohenice is a preserved single-storey rural timber house built using a log construction technique. Its distinctive gable design points to a traditional form of architecture that clearly differs from the town's religious buildings. The townscape is complemented by a statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1821 and a stone cross from 1876. Those travelling with children can discover these different forms together: the church, tower, dwelling, statue and cross each tell their own story of architecture, faith and life in the former village.

Hills, valley and designated landscape features

The landscape also gives Rohenice its own character. The terrain is shaped by two hills and a valley between them. The Žďár forest is also located on the edge of the cadastral area. The local landscape includes the municipal pond, which is designated as a biocentre, as well as a fire reservoir designated as a bathing area. These designations should be retained in their specific meaning: they document the designated function of these places, but say nothing about additional services or general tourist infrastructure.

Cycle path and regional festival tradition

The ceremonial opening of the Rohenice–České Meziříčí cycle path was announced for 30 April 2026. As this date has now passed, no current operating status can be inferred from it. The festival tradition has also been handed down: at Rohenické posvícení, a festival menu was offered featuring duck, schnitzel with potato salad, Pavlišov and Svíčková with cream sauce. Alongside its architectural and landscape features, these dishes give the town a culinary dimension.
