Hřibiny-Ledská – Hillfort, Watermill and Cultural History

Hřibiny-Ledská combines striking traces of past eras with documented routes through a diverse cultural landscape. If you would like to combine historic sites, regional traditions and hiking trails on your journey, the town offers several different points of interest – from the prehistoric hillfort to the Baroque watermill.

Hradiště: a hillfort from the Lusatian culture period

One particularly impressive historical landmark is Hradiště, a grassy promontory between Velká Ledská and Lično. The remains of a hillfort dating from the Lusatian culture period have been preserved there; it is dated to between 1200 and 900 BC. The site occupied an upland area measuring approximately 250 by 150 metres. A double rampart running from north to south separated the hillfort from the rest of the ridge.

However, the history of the area extends beyond Hradiště. A Bronze Age bronze hoard was discovered in the Čápy area, within the cadastral territory of Velká Ledská. Such traces give the surroundings a historical depth that combines well with the visible landscape features and the documented hiking routes.

Watermill, chapels and local monuments

One of the most distinctive buildings is Vodní mlýn Ledská, also known as Mlýn Podlíska. The Baroque watermill stands on the Bělá and features a half-timbered upper floor and a shingle roof. It is surrounded by a large courtyard lined with a series of half-timbered and stone farm buildings. Mlýn Podlíska is probably considered the most significant cultural monument in Hřibiny-Ledská.

The Mlýn Podlíska complex at house no. 56 is registered as an immovable cultural monument under number 2240. It comprises the mill, a barn and a residential building in private ownership. It is also important for understanding local history that a stone cross stands in front of house no. 19 in Hřibiny. Residents had it erected after 1848 to commemorate the abolition of corvée, that is, the end of compulsory labour services.

The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk lies between Hřibiny and Velká Ledská. Hřibiny-Ledská’s cultural monuments also include Kaplička nad Malou Ledskou. Both buildings add smaller sacred monuments, located in different parts of the municipality, to the town’s historical character.

Hiking routes with historical destinations

The documented routes give the landscape a clear direction. One hiking route passes ponds and continues to a point beyond Švandrlík Pond. Another leads across a clearing to Hradiště, continues along a forest road to the road towards Lično, passes through the forest by the transmitter and reaches the turn-off to Podlíska. This provides two differently described routes: one focuses on the pond landscape, while the other connects the hillfort with the forest area and the surroundings of the watermill.

Tradition throughout the year

Living local traditions are also part of Hřibiny-Ledská’s character. A traditional Masopust carnival takes place in the municipality every year. Together with the historic buildings, prehistoric finds and described routes, this creates a destination where cultural history is not limited to a single monument.
