Byzhradec: Panoramic Views, Local History and Cycling

Byzhradec combines impressive distant views with a local history that can be read in its chapel, settlement structure and individual historic buildings. At the same time, the village is a starting point for documented cycling connections through the surrounding area. Panoramas and Landscape around Byzhradec

The view of the entire ridge of the Orlické hory is particularly striking. In good visibility, the panorama also reaches as far as the ridges of the Krkonoše. The view is therefore one of the village’s most distinctive features and gives a stay a landscape dimension that extends beyond the immediate village setting.

Distinctive landscape elements can also be found within the built-up area. There is an artificial water reservoir in the centre. The Chobot stream has a landscape-shaping function and is designated as a landscape value for protection. The village landscape therefore places an artificial water reservoir in the built-up centre alongside a stream with a landscape-shaping, protected function. The two water features thus differ in their role for the village: the reservoir belongs to the immediate village space, while the Chobot stands out as a protected landscape value.

Chapel, Settlement Structure and Historic Traces

Byzhradec is home to the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius, dating from 1869. It forms a specific cultural point of reference in the village. In addition, Byzhradec preserves a historically planned settlement structure of the type known as a “lánová ves”. The village landscape thus places an individual building alongside a settlement form that gives structure to the village as a whole. The chapel and the historic settlement structure offer two different ways of accessing the local history.

In the northern part stands a “podstávkový dům”, designated as an object of local cultural and historical value. Northeast of Byzhradec, beside road III/29844, there is a stone cross on plot p.p.č. 3278. Both features supplement the chapel with further specific stops in the local history, without reducing Byzhradec to a single attraction.

The former school building is also part of the historic character. It was recently renovated and now serves the municipal office and the library. The building thus combines its former use with two present-day municipal functions. Shingles were also produced in Byzhradec in the past. The current name Byzhradec has been used since 1922. The historic traces therefore extend from a former schoolhouse through an earlier craft to the history of the village’s name.

Cycling on Marked Routes

The area around Byzhradec is considered particularly suitable for cycling. Marked cycle route 4349 runs through Opočno, Semechnice, Byzhradec, Černíkovice and Rychnov nad Kněžnou. The five places form a continuous sequence along this route. Another connection is the Podorlická pivní cyklostezka: it leads from Solnice towards Byzhradec and then via a local paved road to Hroška.

When planning a cycling trip, you can therefore choose between marked route 4349 and the Podorlická pivní cyklostezka. There is a designated rest area at the Boží Muka crossroads. Myslivecká chata is designated as a rest area in Byzhradec.
