The Wooden Church of St. Peter and Paul

The wooden Church of St. Peter and Paul in Liberk is considered a unique example of folk art. Its ensemble includes a tiered wooden bell tower and a log-built rectory. Inside, Baroque forms meet regional craftsmanship: the church has coffered ceilings and preserves paintings on wood. It also contains wooden statues of Saint Wenceslas and Saint John of Nepomuk, created by the local sculptor Filip Jakub Prokop.

The entire church ensemble has been a national cultural monument since 2014. Filip Jakub Prokop was born in Liberk in 1740; a commemorative plaque dedicated to him is located at the local kindergarten. Public events are regularly held in the church. However, prior arrangements are required for a guided tour: St. Peter and Paul has no fixed opening hours. Rychmberk and the Traces of the Castle

The remains of Rychmberk Castle lie on a spur above the Liberský potok on the western edge of the municipality of Liberk. The core of the complex was separated from the surrounding terrain by a neck ditch approximately 25 metres wide and around 6.5 metres deep. A well carved into the rock has survived in the former outer bailey. A clearly recognisable path still leads to the castle along the southern slope of the hill.

Hrad Liberk is also an important archaeological site. Local traditions also contribute to the historical atmosphere: the skeletal figure of Liberk is explained by two legends. One Liberk legend tells that a cruel castellan was buried in an old crypt in front of the church altar. This story has been passed down as a legend and adds its own local tradition to the visible traces in the buildings and terrain.

Religious Art and the Rural Townscape

In addition to the large wooden church, Liberk preserves several smaller examples of sacred art. The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk is a small rural church with a wooden bell tower and was built between 1734 and 1736. The village also has a column with a statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, erected at the municipality’s expense in 1751.

Particularly unusual is the Ecce Homo statue from 1777, which was probably created in Vienna. It is considered an early regional example of Classicist art of Viennese provenance. The statue of the Virgin Mary of Wambierzyce also dates from 1777. It reflects devotion to the Marian pilgrimage site of Wambierzyce in Kłodzko. Fragments have also survived of a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk acquired at the municipality’s expense in the same year; a remarkable view of the village is depicted on the front of the pedestal.

At the entrance to the church district stands a sandstone crucifix from 1834. The rural character also includes the brick Chapel of the Coronation of Mary, dating from around the middle of the 18th century, and a preserved farmstead ensemble characteristic of the Rychnov region.

Path into the Liberský potok Valley

For a quieter side of Liberk, the blue-marked hiking trail is a good choice; it leads downhill from the village into the valley of the Liberský potok. The path runs through quiet stretches of forest and is accompanied by the trickling of a stream. This creates a clear contrast to the churches, statues and traces of the castle: on the one hand, concrete evidence of the village’s history takes centre stage, while on the other, there is a path through a subdued landscape. This allows you to explore Liberk according to your interests, either through its cultural history or on foot, without equating the two sides of the place.
