Zahořany

Zahořany is a destination for you if you would like to combine cycling with small cultural and historical discoveries, a revitalized pond and family-friendly activities. Two cycling routes start and end at the same monument, a chapel preserves a local historical connection, and Zahořanský Pond adds another specific place to your day’s itinerary. This allows you to plan your time around activity, history or an outing with children.

Cycling with a shared starting point

The cycling route Blue Circuit – In the Footsteps of the Past can be started and finished at the monument to the fallen soldiers of the First World War in the upper part of Zahořany. The same applies to the cycling route Green Circuit. If you choose between the two routes, you therefore have a shared reference point for the start and finish of the tour.

The Green Circuit is marked throughout with green tourist cycling-route markings. This marking provides an additional distinguishing feature of the route. There is also a rest area and a drinking fountain at the monument in the upper part of Zahořany. This gives you a specific place where you can plan a break without assuming the availability of any other facilities or particular distances.

Chapel and Zahořanský Pond

The Chapel of St. Ludmila is one of Zahořany’s cultural and historical points of interest. It is said to have been built around 1921 by local settlers; it was consecrated in Zahořany. It therefore offers a small, clearly defined insight into the history of the place, distinct from the cycling routes’ sporting opportunities.

Zahořanský Pond also has its own distinctive character. The pond was completely revitalized in 2018–2019. For your planning, the precisely dated change to the site is particularly relevant. In 2025, fishing there was permitted exclusively on a catch-and-release basis; every fish caught had to be returned to the water immediately.

Further Activities and Amenities

In 2025, fishing was also subject to clear spatial requirements: it was permitted only from the dam and from the right or left bank. Fishing from the beach and at the inflow was prohibited. When fishing at Zahořanský Pond, visitors therefore had to observe both the fishing method and the bank area at the same time. The rule applied to 2025.

The Zahořanská 10, held in 2025, had a 10.2 km forest course with 250 metres of elevation gain. For preparing for the race, distance and elevation difference belong together: they shape the time and physical demands. Anyone interested in the race can incorporate the course length and elevation difference into their own preparation. Teqball is played by two or four players. This activity complements the forest run with a game with a clearly limited number of participants.

For a stay with children, Hostinec U Pepíčka is also of interest. It has a summer garden with a children’s playground. The summer garden combines being outdoors with a play opportunity for children in the same place. This allows an outdoor break to be combined with a period of play.
