River Landscape and Protected Nature

In Veltrubský luh, former branches of the Elbe with varying water depths and well-preserved floodplain forests are protected. This means that the focus is not just on a single landscape feature, but on an area with different types of water bodies and characteristic floodplain forests. Protected species in Veltrubský luh include the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina). The scientific name makes clear which species is meant, without implying anything about sightings or accessibility of the area.

Chapels and Churches with Specific Historical Traces

The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the village green of Veltruby opposite house no. 5. Its sandstone portal bears the year 1841; inside is a polychrome statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The portal, year and statue provide several clearly identifiable points of reference for a cultural discovery in Veltruby.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary also has a precisely documented history. It received its present dedication on 14 December 1980. On 30 October 1986, it was entered, together with the statue of Saint Wenceslas, in the central register of the Czech Republic as an immovable cultural monument.

Further historical traces can be found in the context of the area's history: at the early medieval Svatovík hillfort, the remains of the former perimeter fortifications are now visible only as an inconspicuous rise in the terrain. The present late-Classical church between Veltruby and Jezeřany was completed in 1846. Both examples show different forms of the architectural past – from a barely noticeable remnant of an earthwork to a preserved church building.

Cycling and Events

A developed section of EuroVelo 4 between Velký Osek and Kolín passes through Veltruby. Its use is recommended in wet weather. In 2025, the Veltrubská desítka race started and finished at the SK Čechie Veltruby sports field. The programme also included a children's race around Brůdek in Veltruby.
