Úžice – Nature Reserves and Historical Traces around Dřínov

Úžice combines a distinctive landscape with early historical traces and exceptional natural areas. If you would like to combine nature, regional history and a tangible insight into local life during your trip, the town offers several different points of connection.

A location between basin, slope and stream valley

Úžice lies on the southern edge of the Mělník Basin, at the southwestern foot of Dřínov and in the valley of the Černávka stream. These three geographical features give the town a clear landscape framework: the basin, slope and stream valley each represent a different way of experiencing the surrounding area. For families and other travellers who are not looking for just one attraction but want to understand the character of a place, this context is a good starting point.

Protected landscapes with their own character

Several protected areas are among the notable natural features. The Dřínovská stráň Nature Reserve is one of three particularly protected areas in the administrative territory of the municipality of Úžice. The Kopeč Nature Reserve consists of two volcanic hills and is described as the oldest protected area in Central Bohemia. Thus, Úžice highlights both the distinctive forms of individual elevations and the protection of valuable landscape areas.

The Netřebská slaniska tell a story of a different kind of landscape. They are remnants of former marshes and salt marshes in the Úžice area and lie along a railway line. At the same time, the Netřebská slaniska are one of three particularly protected areas in the administrative territory of the municipality of Úžice and protect natural communities adapted to saline conditions. The term “salt meadows” or “salt marshes” is therefore not merely an appealing name, but refers to communities adapted to salty conditions.

Historical traces and local tradition

The first written mention of Úžice dates from 1405. Dřínovská hora points even further back: the mountain was settled and fortified several times, most recently probably around the time of the arrival of the first Slavs. Those travelling with children can use such details as a starting point for conversation and explain the difference between a written mention and much older traces of settlement.

A local tradition is also part of the town’s identity. The Úžický masopust was scheduled for 14 February from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of the local fire station. The event presents a different side of Úžice from the nature reserves and historic elevations: the focus here is on community customs.

For travel orientation, bus route 372 connects Kobylisy, Úžice and Kralupy. When choosing your destination, you can therefore first decide which focus you prefer: protected landscapes, historical traces or a local tradition.
