Chlumín brings together architectural history, religious use and local traditions. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the chapels and the monuments each reflect different historical themes, while local events include fairs, competitions and school performances. This mix gives your stay a distinct cultural focus without tying it to a single occasion.

Church and Castle

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was rebuilt in the Baroque style at its original site in 1732. The year of the reconstruction and the reference to its original site make its connection to the town tangible: the Baroque building was erected on the same site. The church is currently used ecumenically; religious gatherings and celebrations involving various churches and religious communities take place there regularly. It also serves as a funeral hall for civil ceremonies. The regular religious gatherings and the funeral hall represent different uses of the same building.

North of the church stands Chlumín Castle, built in the early 17th century by the Kyšperští of Vřesovice in the Rococo style. Its location north of the church and its builders, the Kyšperští of Vřesovice, place the castle in its geographical and historical context. The castle dates from the early 17th century, while the church was rebuilt in 1732; the dates mark different periods in the town’s history.

Chapels and Memorial Sites

The chapel in the cemetery was built in the 1930s to replace an earlier cross; a legend about death caused by unrequited love is associated with it. A three-sided chapel stands by the former school, and its inclusion in the ÚSKP has been proposed. The difference between the two chapels is clear: the cemetery chapel is associated with a legend, while the chapel by the former school is notable for its three-sided form and the proposal to include it in the ÚSKP.

The Marian Column, also known as the Trojiční sloup (Trinity Column), was erected by Grand Duchess Anna Marie of Tuscany in memory of the victims of a deadly plague. Its sculptural group depicts patron saints. The monument to those who fell in the First World War was erected and ceremonially unveiled in 1923. The two memorial sites commemorate different events: the victims of a plague and those who fell in the First World War.

Local Events

Local events include entertainment and fairs, as well as regular football and firefighting competitions. Children from ZŠ a MŠ Chlumín put on performances and exhibitions, and other community events are held too. The primary school’s annual Christmas concert takes place in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. The church is therefore part of local events as well as the town’s architectural and religious history.
