Svojetín: Chapels, Cultural Monuments and Cycle Route 8167

Svojetín combines several precisely documented traces of cultural heritage with a distinct connection to the landscape. Particularly noteworthy are the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, a historic fortification in the “Na Starém zámku” forest area, monuments from the early 18th century and a cycle route connecting Svojetín with Hořovičky and Klečetné. Chapels and Monuments in the Village

On the village green, opposite House No. 5, stands the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, listed under number 2688. The almost square stone and brick building is coated with white plaster. Its gabled roof, covered with slate slabs, is topped by a hexagonal roof turret without a bell and with an onion-shaped dome. The Baroque chapel was built in 1721–1722. Inside are a stone altar and a polychrome, curved statue of the saint. It is precisely the combination of its architectural form, furnishings and exact dating that makes it a particularly vivid reference point for the local history.

Another historical trace bears the name Statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. Of the protected monument, only the prismatic sandstone pedestal on a square base has survived, as the statue of the Madonna and Child was stolen. The pedestal bears an inscription and the date 1714. The Baroque stone column with a statue of Saint Roch also dates from that year. It is a national cultural monument and stands beside a road outside the built-up area of the village. The statue was erected after the village was spared a plague epidemic.

Other distinctive individual monuments include the brick pillar shrine known as Boží muka, dating from around 1725. In Veclov, Svojetín, the Church of All Saints also points to a documented parish history dating back to 1351. Taken together, these sites do not form a unified architectural ensemble, but rather represent various historical points of reference, each with its own form, function and dating.

Fortification, Tree and Cycle Route

The Dub Fortress is located in the “Na Starém zámku” forest area. The rectangular fortification measures 100 × 80 metres. It is protected by a rampart to the south and east, additionally by a ditch to the north and by a steep slope to the west. The clearly distinct fortification elements make this site an independent historical topic alongside the chapels and pillar shrines.

A natural monument is also part of the local history: the Dub ve Svojetíně tree was first placed under protection on 15 October 1990. For active days, Cycle Route 8167 provides a concrete point of interest. It connects Svojetín, Hořovičky and Klečetné. When planning your trip, you can thus weigh cultural and historical destinations against a route linking several places, without reducing Svojetín to just one attraction.
