Discover Velká Chmelištná

Velká Chmelištná is located in the Jesenicko Nature Park and combines a clearly recognizable village history with distinctive landscape and cultural experiences. In the village center, along the paths through the village and in its associated settlements, you will encounter evidence from various centuries. Village Square, Ponds and Preserved Farmsteads

The village center is formed by a spacious village square with three ponds. Traditional farmsteads with entrance gates and farm buildings stand along the square. The historic character is particularly tangible in the Baroque half-timbered farmstead No. 7, built in 1680 and preserved in Velká Chmelištná. The village square can therefore be understood not only as an open center of the village, but also as a cohesive representation of its former settlement structure.

Near the intersection of the Čistá–Velká Chmelištná and Nová Ves–Křekovice roads, a sandstone statue of Saint Procopius stands in the village center. The statue is about 4 meters high and forms a distinctive solitary landmark within the village. Those interested in local history will also find, on the eastern side of the village near Čočkův Pond, the remains of a fortified settlement with a defensive ditch.

History from the Foundation to the Mining Settlement

The settlement of Velká Chmelištná was founded around 1039 during the Czech internal colonization. Another historical feature is the settlement of Hůrky, which belongs to Velká Chmelištná and originated as a mining settlement in the Middle Ages. These two details give the village a chronological framework extending from the medieval development of the settlement landscape to the preserved buildings and traces in the terrain.

The Church of Saint Bartholomew

The Church of Saint Bartholomew was rebuilt and furnished in 1774. The present church is a late Baroque single-nave building with a rectangular presbytery and an onion dome tower. Its Neo-Baroque tower dates from between 1905 and 1910 and is visible from almost every location within the municipality's cadastral area. The tower therefore helps with orientation throughout the municipal area, while the church building itself makes the village's sacred architectural history visible.

Svatý Hubert and Saint Hubert's Stone

The municipality also includes Svatý Hubert, a forest settlement on the road between Velká Chmelištná and Drahouš. There, Count Prokop Černín of Chudenice had the Svatý Hubert hunting lodge built in the mid-18th century. About 300 meters from the hunting lodge, Saint Hubert's Stone lies along the blue hiking trail in a southeastern direction toward the settlement of Smrk. It has a distinctive bowl-shaped depression and is surrounded by a special aura. For a stay focused on historic sites and paths through the forest, this area offers a separate focal point alongside the village center.

Annual Event and Fishing in the Village Pond

A recurring event is the annual Memoriál Jiřího Uvíry. Volunteer fire brigades from the surrounding area compete in contests accompanied by an entertainment program. The memorial takes place every year on the second Saturday in July; this fixed date is therefore particularly relevant if you would like to coordinate your trip with a local event.

Sport fishing is permitted at the large village pond in Velká Chmelištná in accordance with the applicable fishing regulations. The village pond thus complements the historic village center with an explicitly regulated opportunity for a peaceful activity in the landscape.
