Krchleby: Sacred Culture and Landscapes along the Jánský potok

Krchleby is a destination for anyone who wants to combine historic village culture with exploring the countryside while travelling through the Czech Republic. Sacred buildings, Baroque sculptures, a path along the edge of the forest and the Jánský potok provide several different points of interest. Krchleby is located 4 km west of Čáslav on the old road to Tábor.

Sacred buildings with different characteristics

St. Wenceslas Church is first mentioned in 1352. At the same time, it is an example of rural sacred architecture of early Gothic origin. Thus, Krchleby combines a specific historical date with an architectural reference: the church is not only part of the local tradition, but also represents the development of early Gothic sacred buildings in rural areas.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary lies northeast of Krchleby at the intersection of the Krchleby–Čáslav and Močovice–Žáky roads. It is a small sacred Neoclassical building dating from the first half of the 19th century. Compared with St. Wenceslas Church, it provides a different chronological and artistic accent. Those interested in cultural monuments can therefore trace the range between early Gothic origins and Neoclassical architectural language through these two buildings.

Route to Krchlebská Dubina

Krchlebská Dubina lies approximately 2 km south of Krchleby along the edge of the forest beside the Jánský potok. On the route from Krchleby to Krchlebská Dubina, you can turn into the wooded valley of the Jánský potok. The approximate distance is deliberately intended as a guide rather than an exact route length. For travel planning, the sequence is particularly interesting: from the village, the exploration leads towards the forest edge and onwards to a wooded valley.

In the first third of the route, a statue of St. Francis of Paola stands on a small elevation. The statue is a sandstone sculpture from 1703 and is considered evidence of a high level of Baroque art. Another historic sculpture is the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, dating from 1752. Together with the church and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, these sculptures represent sacred references from different centuries.
