Kalivody: Beech Forests, Hiking Trails and Mining History

Kalivody combines a distinctive forest landscape with hiking trails, educational trail stations and traces of hard-coal mining. A range of experiences is available for planning your trip: an annual hiking event, shorter and longer circular routes, as well as insights into the importance of the beech and the history of Štola Jindřich.

Forests in Džbán Nature Park

The Dolíky landscape near Kalivody is part of Džbán Nature Park. The park is characterized by long, deep valleys and extensive forests dominated mostly by beech trees, and it protects this landscape. The Kalivodské bučiny form a particularly distinctive natural area: Covering almost 200 hectares and significant at European level, the area contains beech stands up to 150 years old.

Hikes with Different Focuses

The circular route Za falešnou borovicí is approximately 11 kilometers long. It leads from Kalivody via Bdín and Mount Vošková to Přerubenice and back to Kalivody. Along the way, the route offers views of the surrounding valleys. Mount Vošková and the surrounding valleys provide landscape reference points in addition to the route itself.

The hike Bučinami ke štole Jindřich begins at the rest area next to the inn in Kalivody. It runs mainly along forest roads and paths, is not marked and is not suitable for walks with a stroller. The route leads to a shelter with play elements, including a wooden xylophone. When choosing between the two circular routes, the approximate length, the nature of the path and the orientation required along the way are therefore the most important considerations.

Educational Trail, Beech and Mining

One sign along the educational trail Naučná stezka Kalivodské bučiny provides information about the management of forest stands, the importance of old and dead trees for forest life, and the importance of the beech tree to people. Another sign along the hike explains coal mining in the surroundings of Kalivody and points to the Jindřich coal adit approximately 50 meters away.

Štola Jindřich documents the extensive mining of hard coal dating from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The hike through the beech forests thus complements a historical trace that connects the landscape with its former use. Stories are also told in the surroundings of Kalivody about the Lord of Kalivody with a black soul.

Hiking in and around Kalivody

Kalivody lies outside marked hiking trails, marked cycling paths and cycling routes. The routes described therefore provide concrete guidance for exploring the landscape. A fixed date in the annual calendar is the hiking and Nordic walking event Kalivodské hůlkování. It takes place every year on the last Saturday in June and is open to anyone who would like to take part in the hike.
