Jílové u Prahy is a destination for travelers who want to discover Czech gold history not only in display cases, but also in tunnels, churches, bridges, and along paths through the countryside. Gold History in the Museum and Underground

At the Regional Museum in Jílové u Prahy, the exhibition “Step by Step Through the History of Gold” traces the history of gold, from gold extraction through Celtic gold panning to medieval deep mining. It includes an accessible replica mining tunnel and an augmented reality application that animates mining machinery. Historical development and illustrative elements are thus presented side by side.

At the Jílové gold mines, the underground via ferrata offers a unique experience. It leads through mining chambers dating from the reign of Charles IV and ends with a descent via ladders and stairs through historic mine workings, before the route returns to the Václav Tunnel. An underground railway also runs to the Pepř shaft at the gold mines.

Tunnels with Different Focal Points

In the surroundings of Jílové u Prahy, the Štola sv. Josefa is among the oldest mining facilities in the Czech Republic open to the public. So far, 280 m of tunnels and passageways have been identified there; the site is also a National Cultural Monument.

The Štola sv. Antonína Paduánského is located in the Studené district of Jílové u Prahy, near the Žampach Viaduct. Its visitor route runs on two levels connected by seven ladders in an original narrow shaft. A stone statue of Saint Anthony of Padua stands at the entrance portal. The Štola Halíře in the surrounding area, by contrast, is an exploratory tunnel from the mid-20th century with a unique diamond-shaped profile. It is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, who can try gold panning there.

Historic Center and Notable Buildings

The historic center of Jílové u Prahy was declared an urban conservation area by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic in 1992. The complex of Kostel sv. Vojtěcha includes a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, as well as a terrace wall and an access staircase. Kostel sv. Vojtěcha itself is an early Gothic church.

Kostel Božího těla is a cemetery church on a hill west of Jílové u Prahy. Beside it is the tombstone of Ida Václavíčková, dating from 1847 and the oldest surviving tombstone in the area. Another notable structure is the Žampach railway bridge, which spans a deeply incised valley on seven stone semicircular arches.

Hiking, Cycling and Views

Jílové u Prahy is the starting point for several hiking and cycling trails with attractive viewpoints, including the Rozhledna Pepř. The public observation platform stands on a telecommunications tower on the 449 m-high Pepř hill, about 1 km south of Jílové u Prahy. The platform is 18 m above the ground and can be reached via 91 steps. An easy circular route around Jílové u Prahy follows part of the Jílovské vyhlídky educational trail.
