Discover Hrušov: Archaeology, History and Trails

Hrušov combines a local history first mentioned in writing in 1346 with archaeological traces, Baroque sculpture and a marked trail connection. Archaeology and the History of the Fortress

A particular archaeological focus is Tvrziště Nad Čertůvkou. It is classified as a significant archaeological site in category UAN I. Here, the designation refers to a clearly designated archaeological site, whose significance remains contained in the classification itself.

The history of Hrušov also includes the younger fortress near the Hrušov estate. It was built in the 14th century and received a new tower in 1501. The tower of the younger Hrušov fortress was blown up and completely removed in 1959. This makes it possible to trace the development of the complex from its medieval origins through its structural addition to its loss in the 20th century.

On the spur above the Četůvka are old ramparts and ditches of a small fortification. The surviving traces in the terrain add another indication of earlier fortifications to the history of the fortress, without implying any present-day use or accessibility.

Únětice Culture and Baroque Sculpture

The burial ground of the Únětice Culture is designated as an archaeological site in Hrušov. It lies on a river terrace on the right bank of the Jizera and was archaeologically investigated in the 1950s. During the excavation, nine skeleton graves with stone lining were examined. This specific number gives the prehistoric site a tangible dimension.

Another historical detail is provided by the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It depicts the kneeling saint in stone clouds before a cross, which a small angel is bringing to him; a second angel emerges beside him. The statue’s soft modelling and tranquil atmosphere are characteristic of late Baroque sculpture.

The statue stands in the fields about 2 kilometres from Hrušov, on the route connecting Hrušov and Horky nad Jizerou. It is located below a ridge with views of the Kokořínsko region and Vrátenská hora. In this way, this single location combines a religious depiction with an open landscape and a regional panorama.

Hiking on the Svatojakubská cesta

The red-marked hiking trail “Svatojakubská cesta” runs along the Krnsko–Písková Lhota–Hrušov section.
