Vrbno – Village Heritage Zone, Vltava Landscape and Cycle Paths

Vrbno combines village heritage with a distinctive river landscape. The village was first mentioned in written records in 1241 and is designated as a protected village heritage zone. If you would like to combine historic structures, nature observation and routes for cycling or hiking excursions during your stay, you will find several clearly distinct points of interest here.

Historic Traces in the Village Centre

An important landmark is the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. It was originally a Romanesque building from the 12th century and was later remodelled in the Gothic and Baroque styles. There is also a row cemetery in the church grounds, which had already served, at least in part, as a church cemetery. As a result, different historical layers meet in one place, without reducing Vrbno to a single building.

The protected architectural heritage also includes Farmstead No. 21. The ensemble comprises a residential building, a barn or granary, a stable, a coach house, a perimeter wall and the associated plot. It lies southeast of the church on the edge of Vrbno’s historic village centre and near a former course of the Vltava. It is also recorded in the village’s history that Vrbno was divided in the past: one part belonged to the Mělník estate, while another belonged to the Vladik family of Mléček and later to the Order of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star.

Vrbenské Tůně on the Vltava

The Vrbenské Tůně wetlands lie along the southern and southeastern edges of Vrbno. They include part of an old branch of the Vltava and a system of pools on the left bank of the river; in total, they cover 43.66 hectares. The area forms a quiet natural environment and a fishing ground, providing refuge for birds and amphibians. Alongside the historic village centre, it therefore offers a landscape whose defining feature is not a single viewpoint, but the interplay of former river channels, bodies of water and riverside habitats.

The VLTAVA 1 A fishing ground includes the 3-hectare Tůň Vrbno in the cadastral area of Hořín/Vrbno. Those interested in the water-focused aspect of the village can consider this as a distinct feature alongside the Vrbenské Tůně, without treating the two names as synonymous.

Cycle Routes and an Educational Trail

There are also several specific connections for active excursions. The Vrbno–Hořín section forms part of Cycle Route 7. The Vrbno–Mělník–Horní Počaply cycle route runs along asphalt and paved paths. Hořín is also connected to the Elbe Cycle Route, the Labská stezka, and is considered a destination for walking and cycling trips.

For a shorter, thematically organised exploration, there is the Vrbno–Zelčín educational trail near the ZOOPARK Zelčín. It is 3.5 km long and has 13 stations. Together with the cycle routes and the riverside landscape, this creates a stay during which cultural history, aquatic habitats and physical activity can be experienced in different stages.
