Tlumačov – Church, Stud Farm and Cycle Paths

Tlumačov combines historical traces, an unusual technical monument and a variety of destinations for cyclists and nature enthusiasts. Those looking for accommodation in Tlumačov will find a place where cultural and landscape experiences can be combined in different ways. The railway station is also relevant when planning your journey: it is served by railway line 330 between Břeclav and Přerov and line 331 between Otrokovice and Vizovice.

St. Martin’s Church in the town centre

In the centre of Tlumačov, on the main road, stands the parish Church of St. Martin of Tours and Sabaria. Its origins are generally placed in the reign of Wenceslaus I, from 1230 to 1253, or in the second quarter of the 13th century. It may have been built in the period following the Mongol invasion of Moravia, that is, after 1241. This cautious dating makes the church a particularly old point of reference in the town.

The church was expanded with a bell tower in 1585, burned down in 1691 and restored as early as 1695. Its layout is oriented and features a set-back rectangular presbytery and a massive bell tower on the west façade. A stone Baroque crucifix stands in front of the entrance. Anyone interested in architectural history can trace several clearly distinct phases of development in a single building here.

The Tlumačov Stud Farm as a Historic Attraction

A second distinctive feature is the Tlumačov Stud Farm. It is considered an important technical monument and has been preserved approximately in the form it had at the beginning of the 20th century. The complex originated as an agricultural courtyard in the 18th century and was later converted into a stud farm. The buildings are arranged around two large courtyards. The entire complex, including its significant buildings, was declared a cultural monument on 15 July 2011.

The stud farm offers public tours of the historic stables and the buildings included in the cultural monument. This means that the site can be experienced from more than the outside; the tour focuses on the history and architectural structure of the complex. Upon prior booking, carriage rides lasting around 60 minutes are also available. For families and other travellers who would like to combine a cultural visit with a special form of transport, this is a distinct excursion idea.

Nature at the Tlumačovská tůňka

The Tlumačovská tůňka is located on the western edge of Tlumačov, on the right-hand side of the road to Kvasice. The pool and wetland landscape protects endangered and legally protected amphibian species, as well as threatened species of freshwater algae and cyanobacteria. The immediate surroundings serve as a breeding area for the edible frog, marsh frog, common toad, European tree frog, fire-bellied toad and smooth snake. Thus, alongside the church and stud farm, there is a natural area with a clear focus on protected species.

Cycling from Tlumačov

For an active excursion, a family-friendly, approximately 12-kilometre-long and flat cycling trip leads from Tlumačov to Kroměříž. The route runs largely away from road traffic, along cycle paths and paved tracks, past the Záhlinické ponds and through floodplain forests along the Morava. The combination of a flat route, bodies of water and floodplain forest clearly distinguishes this tour from a purely local sightseeing trip.

Another point of orientation is cycle route 5181. It runs along the railway line through Tlumačov and continues towards Záhlinice. The approximately 12-kilometre route to Kroměříž and route 5181 towards Záhlinice can be considered separate cycling options. When choosing accommodation in Tlumačov, the planned mix of culture, nature and cycling is therefore a useful starting point for the further search.
