Luhatschowitz – Mineral Springs, Spa Architecture and Trails

Luhatschowitz combines mineral springs, distinctive spa architecture and varied trails to create a destination with many different facets. Spa Centre and Cultural Heritage

The centre of Luhačovice is a protected urban heritage zone. At present, 40 objects, including buildings and works of art, are listed in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. The Luhačovice Colonnade is particularly distinctive. It was designed by Oskar Poříska, follows the style of Dušan Jurkovič and combines his freestanding buildings into a compact spa centre.

In 1902, Dušan Jurkovič remodelled a building in Luhačovice from the original complex of two buildings of the Janův dům in the Art Nouveau style. His first new building was constructed in 1903–1904 in the style of national Art Nouveau. The unique open-air swimming pool with wooden changing cabins is also part of the local history: it was built in 1903 and restored and conserved in 1999.

The museum in Luhačovice presents an ethnographic collection from the 1920s, as well as newer collections on the local spa tradition and history. Temporary exhibitions and accompanying programmes for schools and the general public complement the offering. If a travel group has different interests, the stay can thus be expanded to include architecture, local history and changing cultural topics.

Mineral Springs and Spa Tradition

The springs give the town its own distinctive theme for visitors. At the spring and at the Vincentka dispensing counter, visitors can taste the water cold or warmed. The Vincentka Hall also houses an interactive exhibition about the mineral waters of Luhačovice. Aloiska is the oldest mineral spring in Luhačovice; it supplies 3 litres per minute and is drawn from a depth of 14 metres. The Nový Jubilejní spring has been open to the public since 2013.

Another notable place is Sluneční lázně. After careful reconstruction, the listed complex was reopened to the public and offers an exhibition in three thematic areas on the spa tradition. This means that, alongside the springs, historic spa facilities are also at the centre of attention, without limiting the stay to a single theme.

Trails and Special Experiences

For exploration that is less focused on hiking, a ride on the tourist railway has been one of Luhačovice’s visitor attractions since 2005. Those who would like to discover the surrounding area on foot can choose a 16-kilometre hiking route around Luhačovice. It offers views of the surrounding countryside and includes 250 metres of elevation gain. One section of the route is used by both cyclists and pedestrians. In addition, a shared section of the route is 3,600 metres long; 1,500 metres of it lie within the cadastral territory of Biskupice.

A regular fixture in the annual calendar is the traditional Otevírání pramenů festival on the second weekend of May. It combines the healing springs and impressive spa buildings with traditional dress, Art Nouveau-style costumes, historic cars, dancing and singing.
