Discover Dešná: Nature, Trails and Archaeological Heritage

Dešná combines a forested landscape with an unusually rich cultural and historical heritage. The village is located in the Přírodní park Vizovické vrchy nature park; about half of its 216-hectare area is forested.

Landscape and trails around Dešná

The forested surroundings shape the character of Dešná, without reducing the area to a single natural theme. For active exploration, long-distance cycling route No. 46 runs through the Dešná area from north to south. It thus forms a clearly described connection through the landscape, while the Portášská educational trail offers a different approach to regional topics.

The Portášská educational trail is 7 km long and leads from Oškerovy paseky via Jasenná to Vartovna. Along the route there are six stations and three information points.

Valašsko: Wooden Houses and Listed Buildings

Traditional architecture is also part of the village’s appearance. Several original wooden houses have been preserved in Dešná, characteristic of the Valašsko region. One of the preserved wooden houses is registered as an immovable cultural monument in the state heritage register. The rural dwelling No. 15 has a hipped roof with bevelled gable ends and a covering of beaver-tail tiles. Dwelling No. 15 is registered as an immovable cultural monument.

The architecture can therefore be viewed as more than just a general regional tradition: in Dešná, you will encounter specific preserved buildings and a single dwelling with clearly described architectural features.

Archaeological Traces of Hrádek and Zlatná

The archaeological site of Hrádek is located in the territory of Dešná. It is a fortified hilltop settlement of the Púchov culture from the Late La Tène period, dating to the end of the 1st century BC. Deposits containing iron objects were found at Hrádek. Archaeological research between Všemina and Dešná also established evidence of settlement by the Púchov culture and uncovered traces of a palisade made of posts that was apparently destroyed by fire.

The 1987 investigations at Hrádek yielded a stone axe, pottery and iron objects; the most significant find is considered to be a forge shovel. The Zlatná (Zlatnice) site comprises a settlement of the same culture where Celtic gold coins were found. An estimated 12 to 20 gold coins were discovered there, but only three of them can currently be identified.

The Memorial Cross at Na kopci

Another prominent cultural and historical point in Dešná is a wooden memorial cross at Na kopci. It stands in an elevated location that was deliberately chosen so that the cross could also be seen from a distance. The site lies at a symbolic crossroads. In the past, the memorial cross there marked the entrance to the Všemina area. This former function is part of the site’s history; the elevated location and deliberate visibility, by contrast, describe the cross’s specific arrangement.
