Discover Strmilov

Strmilov combines significant churches, traditional crafts and diverse surroundings. The central landmark on the market square is the Empire-style Church of St. Giles. Other highlights include the Church of St. Andrew, Tkalcovna Kubák and the well-signposted Cycle Route 1113. During your stay, you can discover historic details, a vibrant craft tradition and landscapes that can be explored in different ways.

Churches and Crafts in Strmilov

The parish Church of St. Giles was rebuilt in the Empire style after the major fires of 1824 and 1835. The new building was constructed between 1843 and 1849 and is the central landmark of Strmilov’s market square. The three-nave church has a 33-metre-high prismatic tower. Its furnishings also include a stone baptismal font dating from 1725.

The Church of St. Andrew also reflects various historical periods. Its presbytery contains frescoes dating from around 1604. A commemorative plaque on the church recalls nine American airmen who were shot down near Vlčice in August 1944 and buried beside the church wall. Strmilov therefore offers not only architectural interest but also a place of historical remembrance.

Another aspect of the town can be seen at Tkalcovna Kubák. The craft workshop focuses on traditional wool processing, weaving and the production of designer home textiles. It currently produces mainly wool blankets, plaids and throws, as well as cotton tablecloths, placemats and bags. This makes it possible to see how the regional craft tradition is being combined with contemporary everyday products.

Cycle Route, Watercourse and Landscape

The well-signposted Cycle Route 1113 between Telč and Jindřichův Hradec passes through Strmilov. This allows you to bring together a visit to the town, cycling and observing the landscape in a single plan. In addition, the Hamerský potok has a preserved original riverbed with only minor alterations. Those wishing to combine cultural impressions with a cycling tour or observing the landscape will therefore find a range of themes within the destination.

Further afield in the region are Landštejn Castle and the Janštejn ruins. These destinations broaden the view beyond the town without allowing Strmilov’s own churches and craft history to fade into the background.
