Discover Jasenice: Churches, Fortress and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Jasenice
Jasenice combines historical traces, religious traditions and a clear connection to cycling. Between the Kostel sv. Klimenta Church, the Kaple sv. Máří Magdaleny Chapel and the remains of Tvrz Fortress, a local character emerges that cannot be reduced to a single attraction. The Jezevčí díra karst cave in the surrounding area adds another feature – an unusual natural site in an isolated limestone block.
Church, Chapel and a Long Pilgrimage Tradition
The Kostel sv. Klimenta Church was probably built between the 10th and 12th centuries. Its historical significance is also reflected in its former role as an important pilgrimage site. According to tradition, pilgrimages were already taking place there around 1320. The church also offers a wide view over the surrounding area, giving the site a landscape perspective in addition to its history.
The Kaple sv. Máří Magdaleny Chapel stands in the centre of Jasenice. According to oral tradition, it is considered older than the church. Romanesque window features have been preserved at the chapel; a masonry pulpit is also attached to it. A bell hangs in the wooden roof turret which, according to credible older reports, dates from 1494 and can be rung by hand. Details such as these give the chapel an individual character and clearly distinguish it from the town's broader church history.
Historical Traces of Tvrz Fortress
Another facet of Jasenice is formed by the remains of Tvrz Fortress. Remains with buttresses are visible; the outer front is 18 metres long. The former manor house of the fortress retains one of its two original entrance gates. The surviving remains also show that the complex was once a two-winged Renaissance building. This distinction is important for orientation on site: this is not a fully preserved chateau, but historical structural elements from which the fortress's former appearance can be discerned.
Cycling Route and the Landscape around Jasenice
Jasenice also has a specific connection point for a cycling trip. Cycle Route 5183 runs through the Jasinka Valley to Jasenice. Thus, alongside the churches and fortress remains, a landscape route takes centre stage, connecting the town with its surroundings via the valley. Those wishing to combine culture and activity when planning their trip will find two clearly distinct ways to do so here, without merging the historical themes and the landscape into a single experience.
The Sousoší Kalvárie Calvary ensemble also stands on the way to the Kostel sv. Klimenta Church. It is complemented by rustic sculptures of Saint John and the Virgin Mary, created by the local sculptor Přichystal. Together with the traditional pilgrimage history, this creates a series of religious and artistic points of reference. Nearby, Jezevčí díra adds a natural feature to the picture: the karst cave formed in an isolated limestone block and is considered unusual in the wider surrounding area.
If you are looking for accommodation in Jasenice, you can first choose the focus of your trip according to your interests: historical architecture, religious history, a cycling route through the valley or a scenic detour to the karst cave. For families with different preferences, this combination offers several themes around which a shared stay can be planned, without limiting the town to a single destination.
