Rovná U Hořepníku – Nature, History and Hiking Trail

Rovná U Hořepníku combines a distinctive landscape with a remarkable local history. A landscape between fields, forests and water

The Trnava Natura 2000 site, with Natura 2000 code CZ0613334, protects watercourses extending from lowland areas to montane elevations, as well as the habitat of the Eurasian otter. The protected area includes the cadastral territory of Rovná u Hořepníku. Along the northern boundary of the cadastral territory of Rovná u Hořepníku, the protected area borders Rovná.

The landscape of Rovná consists of a mosaic of agricultural land, wooded areas and scattered greenery. Small watercourses and ponds contribute to the ecological stability and character of the landscape.

Kostel sv. Martina and the history of Rovná

Kostel sv. Martina is at the heart of the local history. The church is a state-protected immovable cultural monument with registration number 14550/3-3268. Rovná developed around this building, which originally served as a parish church. Its architectural form is clearly described: it is a single-nave, longitudinally oriented church building with a tower above the western façade.

The church stands in the middle of a former cemetery enclosed by a retaining or perimeter wall. At the same time, Kostel sv. Martina is registered as an archaeological site in category ÚAN I. Archaeological finds dating from the Middle Ages to the modern period have been documented there or are reasonably presumed to exist.

Another cultural monument is House No. 4. It has local significance and retains the character of folk architecture.

The local history also reaches far back: the first written mention of Rovná dates from 1352. The church’s furnishings and heritage also include the Svatý Martin bell from 1471. There are 119 years between the first written mention in 1352 and the bell dating from 1471. It is the oldest bell still serving its original purpose in the Pelhřimov District. As of January 28, 2022, the church was open and freely accessible during the ringing of the bells on the first Sunday of each month at 12 noon.

Hiking trail to Červená Řečice

Another specific point of interest lies in the vicinity of Rovná: in Bělá Forest, the Cross of Saint John stands beside a red-marked hiking trail from Rovná to Červená Řečice.
