Křeč Between History and Open Uplands

Church of St. James and the Restored Rectory Complex

The Church of St. James the Elder stands on a hill in the southern part of Křeč and is visible from a great distance. Inside, it has 14th-century frescoes. The preserved remains of a Romanesque rotunda are also particularly noteworthy. They suggest that the area of present-day Křeč was already settled in the 12th century. The church building thus combines a visible historical landmark with evidence of the area’s early settlement.

The historical character of the village also includes the rectory complex in Křeč in the Pelhřimov District. It was restored between 2016 and 2018. During this work, preserved painted decorations featuring small rose blossoms on wooden shutters were discovered and conserved. The complex also includes a single-storey residential building from the second half of the 18th century. Those who pay attention to details during their stay will therefore find not just a single historic building here, but various traces from different periods.

Landscape, Streams and Cycle Route

The municipality of Křeč lies on a deforested upland that is atypical of the western edge of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. At the southeastern edge of the cadastral area, the landscape is shaped by the Javornička stream. The Křečský potok stream rises from the village pond in Křeč. Those exploring the village by bicycle can combine these landscape features with the route of Cycle Route No. 6, which passes through Křeč.

Historical Traces Around Křeč

South of Křeč lies the settlement of Svatá Anna in a wooded setting; a church of the same name stands there. Another historical trace leads to Hrádek Castle. It stood on a hill and was fortified by walls and rocks. Hrádek Castle in the Josafatské Valley northwest of Křeč is also mentioned in the land register of the Rosenberg estates from 1379. This medieval record adds another historical reference to the church’s older history.

On the right-hand side of the road from Křeč to Černovice stands a stone monument in the shape of a chalice at the presumed site of the battle. House No. 5 is also one of the noteworthy buildings in Křeč. Together with the church and rectory complex, it creates a village character in which sacred history, historical memory and individual notable buildings come together.
