Krucemburk – Churches, Art and Nature Experiences

Krucemburk combines significant churches, art history and nature experiences with marked cycling routes and a historical route through the region. You can get to know the town through its sacred buildings and monuments, discover natural areas within the municipality, or combine your stay with cycling, swimming and winter sports.

Churches, Art and Protected Cultural Monuments

The Catholic Church of St. Nicholas was built in the 13th century. Its Romanesque sacristy and the lower Romanesque part of the tower also date from the 13th century, while the presbytery and nave were built in the Gothic style in the 15th century. Thus, a single building displays several clearly distinguishable construction phases. The Evangelical church also has a clearly documented history. It was built according to plans by Jan Wurm in the late Classicist Empire style; the foundation stone was laid on 13 June 1839. In addition to regular services, chamber concerts are held there. Krucemburk has a total of 15 state-protected cultural monuments.

Traces of Artists and Historical Details

The Jan Zrzavý Memorial opened in 2002. It is located in the Krucemburk Information Centre and provides information about the artist’s life and work. The extensive visual documentation also includes reproductions of several important works. This allows a visit to the town to be complemented by an insight into art history, without limiting the cultural experience to churches. Other notable landmarks include the Bink family crypt, built according to a design by the architect Josef Gočár and decorated with a sculpture by the sculptor Jan Štursa, as well as the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Krucemburk Square. The statue dates from the early 18th century and has stood there since 1845. The Three Crosses above Krucemburk were erected in 1778 on the initiative of the priest J. Vrba.

Landscape, Cycling Routes and Water

Together with the cadastral areas of Havlíčkova Borová and Staré Ransko, the Ranská jezírka extend across 27.21 hectares. The area was designated a protected natural feature on 4 October 1990. There are numerous marked cycling routes around Krucemburk for active exploration. They run mostly along forest paths or roads with little traffic. In the vicinity of Krucemburk, swimming, refreshments, and boat and pedal boat rental are available at Řeka Pond. This provides an excursion destination involving water in addition to the cultural monuments. Prepared cross-country ski trails are available in Krucemburk for winter sports.

A Route with Different Starting and Ending Points

The “Following the Partisans in the Žďár Region” route begins in Nové Město na Moravě and ends in Krucemburk. It is 30 kilometres long and is not a circular route. To connect the two towns, you can take the train to the starting point in Nové Město na Moravě; for the return journey from Krucemburk, you can use the bus. The Krucemburk Information Centre sells maps and guidebooks and also provides information about public transport connections.
