Dolní Sokolovec is a destination for travellers who want to combine nature experiences with unusual landscape features and an active pursuit. The main attractions are the Doubrava Valley, distinctive rock formations, a protected natural monument and a challenging cycling route that passes through the village. This allows you to set different priorities: You can seek out a viewpoint, explore the geology of the valley or plan a longer trek bike ride.

The Doubrava Valley and its rocks

The Doubrava River flows through the valley for approximately 5 km. The striking formations include Doubravský pilíř and Mikšova skála, each reaching a height of more than 15 m. Čertův stolek is also one of the best-known and most visited rock formations. Its summit offers a view, creating a clear focal point for an outing in which not only the valley but also an elevated viewpoint plays a role.

The rock formations in the Doubrava Valley are visited primarily by climbers. An important restriction applies here: At selected rock formations in the Údolí Doubravy Nature Reserve, climbing is permitted for members of the Czech Mountaineering Club. The regulation should therefore not be understood as general permission to climb on all the rocks. If you are interested in this aspect, distinguishing between the selected formations and the rest of the valley is essential for accurate orientation.

Protected nature with restricted access

Písník u Sokolovce is a protected natural monument covering an area of 0.411 ha. It preserves a partially flooded former sand pit with an abundant occurrence of round-leaved sundew and a breeding refuge for amphibians. This combination of a former sand pit, distinctive plant life and importance for amphibians makes the site a distinct nature-related attraction in the surrounding area.

For planning your trip, the access rule is crucial: Under its founding provisions, Písník u Sokolovce is not accessible to the public. The natural monument is therefore not among the freely accessible attractions, even though its protected habitats form an important part of the local landscape character.

Cycling and getting there

The challenging 50 km cycling route Chotěboř–Havlíčkova Borová–Krucemburk–Podmoklany–Chotěboř passes through Dolní Sokolovec and runs predominantly on roads. It is designed for trekking bikes. For cycle tourists, this provides a documented, lengthy circular route that includes the village. Those combining different interests can treat the cycling route as an active focus and consider the rocks or the Doubrava Valley as additional themes of the trip.

Dolní Sokolovec can be reached by bus from Chotěboř or Libice nad Doubravou. The surrounding area also features a tourist viewpoint in a romantic valley of the Doubrava between Bílek and Libická Lhotka, at the site of the medieval Sokolovec watch fortress (Sokolohrad).
