Castle, Park, and Town History

The castle in Světlá nad Sázavou opened its gates to the general public for the first time in its history in 2014. This dated opening is a significant milestone in the town’s history and gives the castle particular cultural and historical importance when exploring the town.

Světelský Park covers approximately 16 hectares. It was probably created in 1871 by Count František Josef Salm-Reifferscheidt as part of extensive construction and renovation work. Its romantic structures and features include pavilions, stone staircases, Čertův most, an alpine garden, and ponds with water lilies. The town maintains the park for visitors from the town and the nearby and wider surrounding area.

The first written mention of St. Wenceslas Church appears in a document issued by its patron, Abbot Jaroslav II of Vilémov, dated July 13, 1318. At that time, it was a single-nave early Gothic building in the shape of a cross. Since summer 2007, the Muzeum Světelska has been housed in the eastern Baroque wing of the castle. It documents the history of the town, the castle, the noble families, and the nearby surrounding area. The exhibition presents glassmaking and stonecutting as two of the most important livelihoods of the local population.

Landscape and Destinations in the Region

Melechov, classified as a mountain, is located in the surroundings of Světlá nad Sázavou. Ostojovka [Ledeč nad Sázavou-Souboř], also classified as a mountain, is likewise located in the surrounding area. In the nearby surroundings, there is also (Na Podsečí) [Nová Ves u Světlé nad Sázavou], classified as a hill. These different landscape designations give you clear guidance when choosing between nearby and more distant excursion destinations.

The wider region includes Orlík, classified as a ruin; Špičák, classified as a mountain; Želivský Kláštor, classified as a monastery; and Svatá Anna, classified as a church.
