Prosetín between Valley, Nature and Local History

Prosetín lies in a rising valley at an elevation of 540 to 590 metres above sea level and is part of the Svratecká hornatina Nature Park. The village therefore combines a clearly defined landscape setting with an unusually dense succession of cultural and historical traces. If you are looking for accommodation in a place whose character is revealed through more than just a single attraction, you will find several different points of interest here: churches and bells, historical evidence, natural monuments, marked trails and a regional speciality.

The history of Prosetín dates back to medieval times. The village was first mentioned in medieval sources in 1390. The past is particularly vividly reflected in the two churches and the surviving remains of the former limeworks. At the same time, trails lead through the village and along its outskirts into the surrounding countryside, allowing cultural discoveries and outdoor activities to be considered as different focal points when planning your trip.

Churches, Meeting House and Bells

The complex of St Margaret’s Church includes a free-standing brick bell tower. Three bells hang inside it: one dates from 1534 and the other two from 1925. The Catholic Church of St Margaret replaced a wooden predecessor in 1738. This ensemble alone shows how different building phases and religious traditions come together in Prosetín.

An Evangelical church dating from the second half of the 18th century stands in the northern part of Prosetín; the local cemetery adjoins it. The village’s Evangelical heritage also includes the Toleration Meeting House. It was built in 1782 in accordance with the provisions of Joseph II’s Patent of Toleration and is regarded as the oldest Toleration Meeting House in Moravia and in the Czech Republic. For travellers interested in culture, Prosetín therefore offers not just individual historic buildings, but several specific themes through which the village’s history can be understood.

The Prosetín Oak and the Kocoury Natural Monument

Another defining feature is the Prosetín Oak, a tree that has stood for several centuries. It played an important role in the construction of the local Evangelical church. During the Second World War, it also served as a starting point for a local partisan group. The group hid in the vicinity of the Evangelical church and had concealed a radio transmitter there. The tree therefore represents both the village’s long history and a specific chapter from the period of the Second World War.

With the Kocoury natural monument, Prosetín also has a significant natural feature. It consists of a small strip of woodland with warmth-loving vegetation on a limestone substrate. It is home to grass-rich plant communities containing species of botanical-geographical importance; there is also a population of the endangered and specially protected snowdrop anemone, botanically known as Anemone sylvestris. Anyone who wishes to consider protected landscape features and special plant occurrences alongside architectural history when choosing a destination will find a clearly defined natural focus here.

Hiking and Cycling Routes through Prosetín

Prosetín can also be explored via its marked trails. Part of the Štěpánovský čtyřlístek educational trail passes through the village. At the edge of the village, a hiking route turns onto the yellow-marked trail towards Olešnice.

Two cycling routes run through different parts of Prosetín. A section of Cycle Route 5087 runs through the northern part of Prosetín. Cycle Route 5086 passes through the eastern part of the village and connects Starý Svojanov with Nedvědice.

A Regional Speciality

The local specialities include Prosetínské trubičky. They are made according to a traditional recipe from butter puff pastry, supplemented with light meringue and a little lemon juice. This speciality adds a culinary tradition to the picture of Prosetín and may give you an additional reason not to view the village solely from a cultural-historical or landscape perspective.
