Ostrov nad Oslavou between church, river and cycle path
Ostrov nad Oslavou combines several clearly recognisable travel interests: cultural and historical discoveries around St. James’s Church, nature experiences along the Oslava and at the reservoir, as well as a bike ride on a paved path towards Radostín nad Oslavou. This gives you a place that you can get to know from different perspectives, depending on the pace you want for your day. The village also has a railway stop, which is a relevant point of orientation when checking the location for your stay.
St. James’s Church and an unusual former inn
St. James’s Church is considered the defining landmark of Ostrov nad Oslavou. It was first mentioned in 1370 and was rebuilt in its present form in 1885. Those interested in the development of a place can therefore read several historical layers in a single building: the first documentary mention and the much later remodelling that created its present appearance.
Another historical feature is the former inn. It was built around 1720 by Václav Vejmluve, the abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Žďár nad Sázavou, based on a design by Jan Blažej Santini. The building has a symmetrical street façade with a W-shaped floor plan and two adjoining gates. A statue of St. John of Nepomuk, consecrated in 1755, stands between the church and the former inn. This makes it possible to consider the church, building history, statue and gate complex as closely connected when exploring the place, without conflating the individual features.
The former inn building, the two gates and the plot were added to the state register of cultural monuments in 1963. This historical focus is particularly interesting when choosing a location if you want to include not only the landscape but also distinctive architecture and local history in your stay.
Tradition, water and paths
At the end of July, after 25 July, Ostrov nad Oslavou celebrates a traditional St. James’s church fair. The date is directly connected with St. James’s Church and gives the local history a festive reference tied to a clearly defined time. If you plan your trip for this period, the St. James’s church fair is a distinct cultural point of interest alongside the historic buildings.
The Oslava flows through Ostrov nad Oslavou. In addition, the Ostrov nad Oslavou Reservoir has a 2.5-kilometre stretch of bank designated for fishing. The connections with the water therefore differ clearly: the river is part of the village itself, while the reservoir is associated with a specifically designated stretch of bank. Fishing is the documented use here; further activities on the water should not be assumed.
For active days, a paved cycle path leads from Ostrov nad Oslavou towards Radostín nad Oslavou. The path runs away from the main road.
