Nové Dvory is home to a centrally located Neo-Gothic chapel and several memorial sites commemorating specific chapters in the town’s history. A route passing through several places and KČT cycling route No. 19 also pass through the town. Architectural history, remembrance and tour planning thus come together here.

The Marian Chapel and its architectural features

The Neo-Gothic Chapel of the Virgin Mary stands in the centre of Nové Dvory. Master builder Pecháček from Přibyslav erected it in 1901. The pointed-arch windows on the side walls stand out, while the façade features a narrow entrance with a pointed arch. The recurring pointed-arch motif thus links two different architectural elements.

“Neo-Gothic” describes a style that draws on forms from the Gothic period. The year 1901 also places the chapel in its historical context: its design is Gothic in character, but it was built in a much later period. Its dedication to the Virgin Mary adds the building’s religious significance to its architectural description.

Memorial sites with different historical connections

A memorial to those who fell in the First World War was unveiled right next to the chapel on 18 August 2013. Another memorial stands on the right-hand side of the chapel. It commemorates a Red Army soldier who died there on 14 May 1945.

The two memorial sites commemorate different things: one is dedicated to a group of fallen soldiers, the other to an individual soldier and the date of his death. The years also refer to different events: 1945 marks the soldier’s death, while 2013 is the year the memorial to those who fell in the First World War was unveiled. Together with the chapel, they offer several specific ways to explore the town’s history.

Religious tradition and local history

A 2021 municipal description mentions a holy mass held in the chapel every year on the third Sunday in August. It gives thanks for the harvest and blessings received. If you would like to include the occasion in your travel plans, check the exact date in advance.

There is also a wayside cross on the outskirts of Nové Dvory. According to a local resident, it is said to have been moved to its present location from a disused cemetery. Unlike the dated memorial sites, this account is rooted in local tradition. The settlement of Nové Dvory was first mentioned in writing in 1444.

Routes through Nové Dvory and the Sázava countryside

A route descends from the summit of Peperek through Velká Losenice, Nové Dvory, Buková and Nížkov to Rosička. KČT cycling route No. 19 offers another point of reference; its stated sequence runs through Rosička, Nížkov, Buková, Nové Dvory and Přibyslav.

The descriptions serve different purposes when planning a tour: one focuses on the descent from the summit and the sequence of places, while the other is explicitly identified as a cycling route. If you plan to travel by bike, check the current route conditions before setting out. Nové Dvory lies in the Sázava river landscape; this regional setting complements the local architectural and memorial sites.
