Chřibská between waterfalls, forests and culture

Chřibská combines wooded basalt peaks, short hiking trails, historic sites and cultural discoveries. For your travel planning, the town offers both an approximately 3 km circular route to the Chřibské Waterfalls and longer marked trails, viewpoints and excursion destinations with a history.

Waterfalls, forest trails and viewpoints

The short circular route to the Chřibské Waterfalls begins and ends in Chřibská’s market square. The waterfalls consist of two small natural cascades. There, the water flows down the foot of Plešivec over two rock steps. This makes it possible to combine a short nature experience directly with getting oriented in the town.

Chřibský vrch is a wooded basalt peak at an elevation of 621 m, located about 2 km southeast of Chřibská. Marked trails can pass through the Lesní divadlo as a shorter loop or, for experienced hikers, be extended to Křížový vrch and onward to Studenec. Another marked hiking trail leads from Chřibská through the forest to Malý Stožec, from where there is a view of the reservoir.

About 3 km from the market square in the direction of Doubice, a viewpoint on a basalt rock offers a view into the Chřibská valley. In Dolní Chřibská, there are also wet meadows with rare plants, including the broad-leaved marsh orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis). Marschnerova louka was designated a natural monument in 1995, and Louka u Brodských was likewise designated three years later. Dolní Chřibská is a district of the town of Chřibská and belongs to the European Site of Community Importance České Švýcarsko.

Church, museum and summer culture

The Church of St. George was extensively rebuilt in the Renaissance style between 1596 and 1605. Its furnishings are partly Baroque and partly Rococo; the church also has two bells dating from 1460 and 1598. The exterior walls feature Renaissance tomb monuments of prominent citizens of the town from the 17th century.

Chřibské kulturní léto has existed for three decades. Every year, four classical music concerts take place in the Church of St. George from June to September. During the summer, concerts and performances by local interest groups are also held at the Lesní divadlo.

The museum in Chřibská opened on 10 August 2002 in the renovated House No. 22. Tadeáš Haenke was born in this building on 6 December 1761. The museum can be visited mainly during the peak season; outside this period, visits can be arranged for other dates and times by agreement. Chřibská’s information centre is also located in the market square in House No. 22 and offers tourist materials, maps and brochures.

Technical monuments and traces of the past

The aqueduct near Dolní Chřibská is a remarkably well-preserved technical monument whose history dates back to 1886. It is freely accessible year-round. At Chřibský hrádek, archaeologists found the remains of a small rock castle from the 13th century. Chřibský hrádek is situated on a steep rock above the valley of the Doubický potok, about 2 km from Chřibská.

The history of glassmaking is also part of the townscape: the glassworks in Horní Chřibská is mentioned as early as 1414, but its operation ceased in 2007.
