Krhovice: Water Landscape, Nature and Moravian History

Krhovice combines the Dyje with a distinctive water engineering history, a protected natural monument and noteworthy traces of local history. This creates a destination where paddling, swimming, nature observation and cultural discoveries can be combined in different ways. The artificial waterways along the Dyje also reach back into the history of the village, while Vraní vrch provides a distinctive natural accent.

Water on the Dyje

The Dyje paddling route from Krhovice to Hevlín passes through the Meandry Dyje Nature Reserve and is suitable for beginners. Another focal point is the Vraní vrch Natural Monument. Its purpose is to protect xerothermic plant and animal communities on muscovite orthogneiss of the Krhovice Crystalline Complex. Endangered plant species grow at Vraní vrch, including the Bohemian golden star, large-flowered pasqueflower, purple mullein and feather grass. The natural area thus combines protected communities with the muscovite orthogneiss of the Krhovice Crystalline Complex as its geological foundation. Historic Water Engineering Structures

Krhovice’s water landscape is also notable from a cultural and historical perspective. It is a technical monument and is considered Moravia’s oldest water engineering structure. Its first written mention dates from 1302. The two waterways have different relationships with the Dyje: the Mlýnská strouha branches off from it, while the Krhovice–Hevlín irrigation canal is fed by it.

St. Bartholomew and Local History

The Church of St. Bartholomew is part of Krhovice’s cultural heritage. It was built in 1861–1862 and stands in the southern part of Krhovice above the left bank of the Dyje and the Krhovice–Hevlín canal. Two valuable Classicist tombs are located on the northeastern façade of the presbytery. Its position above the two waterways spatially connects the religious building with Krhovice’s water landscape.

Hiking, Water and Local History

Hiking tourism is one of the leisure activities in Krhovice. Alongside the Dyje paddling route, it represents a second form of activity; the water route runs from Krhovice to Hevlín through the Meandry Dyje Nature Reserve.
