Volfířov: Nature Reserve, Churches and Cultural Routes

Volfířov is a destination for travelers who want to combine nature, churches and routes with different cultural focuses. The place is particularly defined by Olšina u Volfířova Nature Reserve, the Church of St. Peter and Paul, the Evangelical Toleration Complex in the district of Velká Lhota and the Dačice–Volfířov route. This puts landscape, history and cycling at the center of your planning.

Natural Environment and Species

Olšina u Volfířova was first designated as a nature reserve on December 10, 1987. The area protects a spring and stream alder forest with an abundant occurrence of spring snowflakes. It is also home to populations of rare animal and plant species that are linked to the pond ecosystem. For you, this represents a clear nature focus: not only the forest, but also the connection between the spring, stream, pond and species occurrence defines the landscape theme.

Churches and Historic Places

The Church of St. Peter and Paul in Volfířov is an oriented, single-nave building within the former cemetery grounds enclosed by a wall. It was originally Early Gothic and dates from around 1300. The west façade and tower were built in 1767. This building therefore reveals several clearly distinguishable periods: its early origins and the later additions from 1767.

The Evangelical Toleration Complex is located in the district of Velká Lhota. It comprises two churches and two adjacent vicarages and is a state-protected monument. A permanent exhibition is entitled “Česká reformace v evropském kontextu”. A nature trail also meets the hiking trail “Cesta valdenské a české reformace” there; the middle section in the vicinity of Velká Lhota has already been marked and equipped with information panels. For a culture-oriented day trip, the buildings, exhibition and trail themes can be combined here.

Řečice Château adds a clearly defined note to the historical themes: the upper floor contains a former castle chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The château is not open to the public and should therefore not be planned as a public sightseeing destination.

Cycling, Hiking and Other Activities

There are also specific options for active planning. The Dačice–Volfířov route is easy and suitable for trekking and mountain bikes. The hiking route described recommends reaching Velká Lhota by bus. In addition, construction of the infrastructure for a multipurpose sports field has been completed in Volfířov. These notes concern different forms of transport and activity and complement the cultural themes with a sporting perspective.

Which Focuses Suit Your Trip

When choosing accommodation, you can first determine your preferred focus: Olšina represents nature and species occurrence, Volfířov’s churches represent architectural and local history, Velká Lhota represents Reformation history and marked trails, and the Dačice–Volfířov route represents cycling. For families with different interests, this classification makes it easier to decide which experiences should be at the center of the trip.
