Discover Malsching: Culture, Landscapes and Cycling Routes

Malsching is a destination for travellers who want to combine cultural history, landscapes and cycling. The main attractions are the Srdce Ježíšova Church, Thumberg Chapel on Turmberg, and the surroundings shaped by forests, meadows and pastures. There are also several cycling connections. This allows you to explore the area according to your own interests and combine cultural discoveries with time spent in the landscape.

Cultural history around the church

The Srdce Ježíšova Church and its surrounding wall are registered cultural monuments. Their history dates back to the former early Gothic Church of St. Markéta, which is now called Srdce Ježíšova Church. The building was remodelled in 1593, redesigned in the Baroque style at the end of the 17th century, and altered again in the second half of the 19th century. The sacristy clearly dates from the second half of the 13th century. The first written mention of the former Church of St. Markéta dates from 1339.

Thumberg Chapel and historical traces

The pilgrimage Chapel of Panny Marie Pomocné was built on Turmberg in 1856 and stands 450 m south of the church. Thumberg Chapel is a distinctive landmark of Malšín and a cultural monument. Grilles allow visitors to look inside the small church building. At the site of the former guard castle near Thumberg Chapel, there are two benches with views to the south, as well as a covered shelter with a waste bin.

Forests, meadows and wide views

Around half of Malšín’s cadastral area is forested; a large part of the area is used agriculturally as meadows and pastures. In the terrain around Turmberg, remains of a rampart surrounding the former tower or castle complex can be seen. From Tumberg, there is an extensive view to the south over a hilly, forested landscape with meadows. Alongside the architectural history, the open landscape therefore forms a distinct part of the travel experience.

Cycling routes through Malšín

Several routes pass through the village for active days. The Krumlovská cycle path runs through Malšín, as does Velotrail 1–Frymbursko. Malšín is also located on the 42.3 km Vyšší Brod–Malšín–Frymburk–Hořice na Šumavě cycling route. The specific length of this route makes it easier to estimate its scale when planning a trip, while the two other connections provide additional options for finding your way by bicycle.

If you are looking for accommodation, you can base your choice on the desired combination of culture, landscapes and cycling. This provides several points of interest for a travel group with different interests: historic buildings, a southern landscape view and cycling connections. The 450 m between the church and the pilgrimage chapel at least establishes the spatial relationship between these two cultural destinations.
