Přední Zborovice: Volyňka, Trails and Historical Traces
Accommodation in Prední Zborovice
River Landscape in the Foothills of the Šumava
Přední Zborovice lies on the Volyňka in the foothills of the Šumava. The river flows through the village, forming picturesque bends and corners along its course. The surrounding area offers excellent conditions for hiking; at the same time, the landscape can be explored through its paths, river courses and cultural-historical traces. For families who want to combine nature and history, the most memorable impressions here are often found in small details: a historic crossing, a chapel by the road or traces of an old transport route.
Small Structures with a History of Their Own
Near the Volyňka River, the Kaplička Ukřižování Páně stands at the fork in the road to Sousedovice and Radošovice. It is located between two mature protected lime trees and dates from the first half of the 18th century. The chapel is two metres high, has a rectangular ground plan and faces east.
The Boží muka dates from the 17th century. It has three storeys separated by cornices, each becoming smaller towards the top, and stands in a field between Přední Zborovice and Radošovice. A stone bridge over the Volyňka was built between 1912 and 1913. Thus, the surrounding area brings together small sacred monuments and a structure from the early 20th century, each with its own form and historical period.
Historical Traces between Forest and Trail
Above Přední Zborovice, you can see the remains of a medieval hillfort while walking through the dense coniferous forests. Finds of Roman coins and other objects of Roman origin point to a historic route through Zborovice. In the time of Maria Theresa, Přední Zborovice lay on the so-called old road that led from Mýto (Mauth) in Bavaria towards Strakonice.
Local traditions also give the landscape an additional historical dimension: soldiers from the Swedish wars are said to be buried beneath the Zborovické lípy. Merchants’ records also describe Přední Zborovice as a popular resting place after the strenuous descent from the Šumava forests.
Hiking, Cycling Route and Local Orientation
The Volyňka cycling route passes through Přední Zborovice and runs from the source of the Volyňka in the Šumava to its confluence with the Otava in Strakonice. For hiking, the Zlatá stezka provides another specific reference point: beyond Přední Zborovice, it leads to a fork in the road below Mount Ostrá. From there, there is a wide view towards the Volyňka valley.
The section of the Volyňka flowing through Přední Zborovice is designated as a trout water. For local orientation, the Přední Zborovice stop is located on the eastern edge of the village along railway line 198 between Strakonice, Vimperk and Volary.
