Rovná: Nature, History and Distinctive Village Culture
Accommodation in Rovná
Rovná combines village history and natural features with concrete discoveries for days when you want to explore culture and the landscape independently. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore particularly useful to consider whether you want to focus your stay on local history, nature observation, cycling or a mixture of these activities.
Village History by the Sports Field and Village Square
Two different landmarks take centre stage in the village itself. The Chapel of the Holy Cross dates from 1717 and stands next to Rovná’s sports field. On the village square is agricultural homestead No. 26, dating from 1852. Its gable is designed in the folk Baroque style; the property also includes a vaulted chamber that served as a kitchen and a room with a wooden-beamed ceiling.
Cycle Route and Field Path as Different Points of Orientation
The paths also give Rovná a clear profile. Cycle Route No. 1260 from Strakonice to Písek passes through Řepice and Rovná. From Rovná, a field path continues eastwards to Chlum Forest. If you want to research a cycling connection and another route separately, this information provides clear guidance for planning your day.
Educational Trail, Nature Topics and Regional Customs
The Rovná Educational Trail was ceremonially opened on 20 September 2025 and has five information boards. It presents the history and present of the municipality, rare natural phenomena and historical sights in the surrounding area. Its range of topics therefore combines history, nature and regional orientation. This picture is complemented by the Modrý Hořec association, which traditionally organises the Drakiáda and Morana-Austragen events in Rovná. Alongside nature and history, you can therefore also encounter local customs.
Natural Monuments Around Rovná
The natural features include the Rovná National Nature Monument and the Sedlina Nature Monument. The Rovná National Nature Monument lies in a meadow on the north-western shore of Rovenský rybník; in spring, spring gentian (Gentiana verna) blooms there. Sedlina lies in the northern part of Rovná’s administrative area. The site is an important location for the highly endangered pale orchid (Orchis pallens), the only occurrence of this species in the southern half of Bohemia. The Rovná locality near Strakonice also has a lowland population, which was described in 2026 as the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic.
The Lime Kilns of Zbuš
The rural lime kilns of Zbuš provide another historical point of interest. They date from the 1880s. At the southern edge of the abandoned limestone quarry on Zbuš stand two domed kilns built from fired bricks; technical details of their construction are still visible. Rovná limestone was used to build barracks, schools and other buildings in Písek. The kilns therefore illustrate both a historical construction method and the former use of the material.
