Písecká Smoleč: Hillfort, Chapels and Paths Through History

Písecká Smoleč combines the history of a village with distinctive traces of different eras. History in the Village Landscape

The first written reference to Písecká Smoleč dates from 1379. An unusual archaeological indication was discovered before 1975 in the courtyard of house no. 12 and in the adjoining garden: coins of unknown age and fragments of vessels were found there. The finds give the village historical depth without the need for a large museum complex.

The hillfort of Písecká Smoleč is particularly striking. It is located on a prominent peninsula formed by the last meander of the Židova strouha. The fortification dates from the Hallstatt period. The enclosed hillfort complex consists of two parts, making its clearly structured historical layout visible. The Hrad Zvíkov castle is also located in the wider surrounding region.

Chapels, Places of Remembrance and Film History

On May 15, 2026, a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk was placed in the chapel in Písecká Smoleč. The reconstructed Chapel of Saint Adalbert also contains a memorial plaque bearing the names of twelve local residents in gold lettering who did not return home from the First World War. The two sites represent different forms of remembrance.

The village’s more recent cultural history is also part of its character: The 1963 film Einstein kontra Babinský was filmed, among other places, at the fire station on the village square in Písecká Smoleč. The Church of Svatý Jan is located nearby. The historical site “Lety u Písku. Památník holokaustu Romů a Sintů v Čechách” is situated in the wider surrounding region.
