Nová Olešná – Valley, History and Nature in Czechia

Nová Olešná combines a distinctive landscape with traces of a long local history. The village lies in a beautiful valley along a stream lined with alders. These trees gave Nová Olešná its name and also shape the landscape that makes the village particularly easy to understand. For visitors, this creates a destination where nature, religious architecture and the history of the Bohemian Brethren come together within a compact thematic area.

Valley, Stream and Historical Name Traces

Nová Olešná was established in the 12th century. The first written record dates from 1379. Until 1947, the village was called Německá Olešná, or Deutsch Wolleschna in German. This history of the name shows how the identity of the village developed across different historical periods, without diminishing the significance of its present-day Czech name.

Because of its secluded location, Nová Olešná became one of the places of refuge for the Bohemian Brethren. Visitors can also encounter this historical connection in the local memorials. The Jan Amos Comenius Monument stands at the former cemetery of the Bohemian Brethren on the southern edge of Nová Olešná. It consists of a granite stone from 1929 set on a pedestal. The stone bears a bronze relief medallion with the inscription “J. A. KOMENSKÉMU” and the head of the teacher. The monument also bears the inscription “PAMÁTCE / ČESKÝCH BRATŘÍ”.

Chapel in the Village Center

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity stands in the center of Nová Olešná. Its stone portal dates from 1722; the chapel from that year is an example of small-scale Baroque sacred architecture and has notable bells. The brick-built, plastered chapel with a three-sided apse stands on a sharp bend. It is therefore not only a historic building but also a clearly recognizable landmark within the village.

The monument on the southern edge and the chapel in the center create different focal points: here, the history of the Bohemian Brethren can be traced through a former religious setting and a later memorial, while there, small-scale Baroque sacred architecture is on display. The monument stands on an unfenced, grassy area with mature trees.

Nature and Public Recreation

Another natural attraction is Malý Bukač. The nature monument protects the ecosystem of a pond and the surrounding habitats, which are home to specially protected and significant animal and plant species, particularly amphibians. Those who want to place greater emphasis on the landscape when planning their trip will find a different way to experience Nová Olešná here than through its local history and buildings.

Komáří louka is intended for public recreational use and is suitable for individuals, families with children, and smaller and larger groups. There is also a tennis court at Komáří louka; tennis equipment can be rented. Alongside historical discoveries, this means there are also opportunities for active recreation.
