Nišovice on the Volyňka – Mill History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Nišovice
Nišovice on the Volyňka
Nišovice lies on both banks of the Volyňka in the hilly landscape of the Volyňská vrchovina. The riverside setting and the varied surroundings give the village a distinct spatial character. In Nišovice, mill history, religious buildings and routes for different types of cycling tours can be combined in a variety of ways to explore the area.
Mill History and Village Character
At the Seberův water mill, the original milling equipment and the remains of a waterwheel shaft have been preserved. The mill complex is located on the Volyňka and the millrace and comprises a residential building, a mill building, a granary and farm buildings. This brings together technical traces and different types of buildings in one place. The water mill has been preserved in the form it had in 1852; later changes mainly concerned the raising of the mill building. For those interested in cultural history, this offers a close look at the complex and its architectural development.
The history of the village also includes leather processing. In 1875, Joáchym Miniberger from Volyně established a branch leather factory in Nišovice on the meadow called Tuláků louka and at the same time purchased the Tuláků mill. The factory remained in the family’s possession until 1922. Alongside the older milling technology, this adds an industrial chapter that is clearly distinct in time from the preserved form of the water mill. Those wishing to follow the development of the village will find a second historical focus here.
The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius is located on the village green in Nišovice. It was renovated from 2011 to 2014. In the direction of Volyně, there is also the wayside shrine called Boží muka. Both places supplement the mill history with religious elements and are located in different parts of the village or its surroundings. Those wishing to combine a walk with views of smaller structures will find here an addition to the technical and industrial history.
Cycling with Different Types of Tours
The cycling routes also offer two clearly different forms of travel. Cycle Route 1247 passes through Nišovice along the Nišovice–Volyně–Předslavice route. It thus connects Nišovice, Volyně and Předslavice in one continuous direction. A round trip begins at Nišovice railway station and follows the Volyňka along the red-marked hiking trail and Cycle Route 121. The railway station provides a fixed starting point, while the route follows the river and the marked trail. Those who prefer a ride with a set direction can use Route 1247; those who prefer a round trip can start at Nišovice railway station.
The Na opukách Landscape Area
Na opukách adds its own distinctive landscape feature. Access is unrestricted; by car, the site can be reached to within 250 m. The area is significant for its landscape and contains scattered greenery as well as fragments of non-wooded communities. Its open structure with individual green areas complements the mill buildings and religious sites with a landscape focus. When planning a day in Nišovice, Na opukách expands the historical themes with landscape observation. When arriving by car, visitors should bear in mind that a walk of up to 250 m remains necessary to reach the site.
