Hills and trails around Subschitz

Subschitz lies at the foot of the Poluška Hills, about 620 metres above sea level. Locally, Poluška is also called Kuklíky. Mount Horní Háj is on the northeastern slope of Subschitz; at 739 metres above sea level, it is the highest point in the municipality. These elevations add a specific topographical reference to the village’s location at the foot of the hills.

The hiking and cycling trails around Subschitz offer views of the village on the opposite mountain, Svatý Ján nad Malší. Other landmarks in view include Včelíny, Kleť and the horizon of Blanský les.

Cycle route 1199 Práčov–Velešín passes through Subschitz. Within the municipality, the route connects in Práčov with the Vltava Cycle Route from Šumava to Mělník, which is part of the international EuroVelo 7 route. If you are planning a ride, check the signage and trail conditions in advance.

Village green and local history

Subschitz retains the layout of a village founded around a circular green; the arrangement is still recognizable today. A wooden bell tower stands on the village green. This brings the shape of the settlement and a single historic structure together in one place. The first written mention of Subschitz dates to 1358 and is associated with the Lords of Pořešín.

Markvartice also has the circular layout of a village green. The grassy green is surrounded by lime trees and large farmsteads that point to the original settlement layout. In Subschitz, the recognizable plan and wooden bell tower shape the village green; in Markvartice, it is the green space, lime trees and farmsteads.

Markvartice is also home to the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. The chapel dates to 1873 and has been restored. Its historicist style features Baroque and neoclassical elements. In Subschitz, house No. 12 is a cultural monument.

Leisure and cultural heritage

Pflégrův mlýn is a large farmstead associated with the Zubčický potok. It was built in 1867 by miller Jan Pfleger (1816–1889).

Above the village, the tennis courts of TJ Zubčice form a fenced complex with changing rooms and a technical building. They are mainly used for recreational sport. If tennis is part of your plans, confirm the current operating conditions before your visit.

The local restaurant Zubčická lavina hosts entertainment evenings with live music in various genres. If you would like to plan for one of these evenings, check the specific event dates in advance.
