Lipnice Between the Village Square, Ponds and History

Lipnice is located in South Bohemia, 11 km south of Třeboň, on the road to Nové Hrady. The village combines a clearly recognizable South Bohemian village structure with a chapel dating from 1800, several ponds on the large village square and traces of a long history. Local History and South Bohemian Village Structure

Lipnice was founded in an area that belonged to the Cistercian monastery of Zwettl (Světlé) in the 12th century. The nobleman Mikuláš z Lipnice, known by the epithet Vícemil, is first mentioned in connection with Lipnice in 1378. The later development of the village included 18 farmsteads built after the Thirty Years' War, which shaped Lipnice's present appearance.

The traditional structure of a South Bohemian village is clearly defined in Lipnice: rows of farmsteads with courtyards enclosed on four sides are aligned with the large village square. There are also examples of South Bohemian folk architecture. For exploring the village together, this combination offers specific themes through which you can examine the village's history and appearance in turn.

The Village Square as the Center

Lipnice's village square is home to the square Chapel of the Holy Trinity, dating from 1800. Its form is unusual in South Bohemia: church buildings of this shape are not found there. The large village square also contains several ponds. Thus, religious architecture, the farming-influenced settlement structure and the documented connection between the village square and bodies of water in Lipnice come together in one place.

The story of the legionnaire Petr Zíka is also one of the village's documented historical connections. Petr Zíka served in the Česká družina in Russia and fell on 2 July 1917 in the Battle of Zborov. This individual life story adds a specific connection to 20th-century history to the village's older history.

Ponds with Their Own Character

Nový Lipnický Pond (Podřezaný) is a peat pond with unusually brown water. Brown water flows into it from the nearby Červené Blato Nature Reserve. The name Podřezaný also refers to a fish-breeding pond operated by Rybářství Třeboň, which is also used for recreation. Thus, different functions coexist in the landscape around Lipnice: the peat pond's distinctive water color, the inflow from the nature reserve, and its use as a fish-breeding pond and recreational site.

Lipnice can be reached via a district road from Kramolín and via roads from Cep and Kojákovice. Its location on the road to Nové Hrady and the additional roads provide the village with several documented access routes.
