Chrást on the Orlík Reservoir
Chrást between the reservoir, trails and historic traces
Chrást lies on the right bank of the Orlík Reservoir. Its location by the water is not its only defining feature: in the surrounding area, the shoreline, the path through the valley of the Žebrákovský potok and roads with viewpoints converge on prominent structures. This gives the place several spatial connections. From the water, the view extends across a landscape of paths and valleys; from the roads, sightlines open towards Žďákov Bridge and Orlík Castle. Historic structures and landscape lie within the same local surroundings. Water, trails and cultural attractions thus shape different aspects of Chrást.
From Kostelec nad Vltavou, a field and forest path leads north through the valley of the Žebrákovský potok. Fields and forest determine the route, while the stream characterizes the valley. Compared with the shoreline location on the Orlík Reservoir, this path leads into an inland area. The open shoreline and the more enclosed valley therefore stand side by side as different landscape settings. The northward direction and the route through the valley are an integral part of the described path connection.
Bridge, castle and educational trail
Chrást can be reached by road from Zahořany. Two specific roadside views are important for orientation in the surrounding area. From the road west of Chrást, there is a view of Žďákov Bridge. At the end of the road near the Orlík Reservoir, Orlík Castle is visible. The bridge and castle thus mark two different points in the vicinity: the bridge lies in the western roadside view, while the castle is at the end of the road near the reservoir. Both sightlines form part of the approach and make the surroundings comprehensible through different structures.
Chrást lies on the Kovářovsko educational trail as station 5. The entire educational trail comprises three routes totaling 50 km and 21 stations in all.
Local history and nearby destinations
The Radava recreational area lies near Chrást and adds another nearby location to the shoreline and trail connections. The local history also includes the fortress with its enclosed farmyard. The farmyard complements the fortress with a clearly defined part of the complex. The fortress with the farmyard is a significant urban-planning, historic and landscape-defining element. It is therefore one of the cultural features that, alongside the reservoir, trails and roadside views, belong to the surroundings of Chrást.
South of Chrást was the former Schwarzenberg game preserve. Mouflon, fallow deer and red deer lived there. The former facility is part of the history of the area south of Chrást.
