Horní Slatina – Church, Wet Meadows and Castle History

Horní Slatina between the confluence of streams and ancient history

Horní Slatina lies in the northern foothills of the Jemnice Basin, in the valley of a right-bank tributary of the Želetavka. The village is situated at the confluence of two streams that flow from a small depression, at the foot of the Slatinské kopce ridge. Here, a clearly recognizable landscape form meets several centuries of local history.

Wet meadows, peat and the edge of the coniferous forest

Behind Horní Slatina, wet and peat meadows lie at the edge of a coniferous forest. The wet meadows form the source area of a watercourse that feeds the Horní rybník pond. Numerous notable plant and animal species occur in the wetland. This natural area is therefore a distinct focal point of the village: not only the settlement itself, but also its transitions to the watercourse, meadows and forest shape the character of the surroundings.

Individual protected trees or trees of significance to the local culture of remembrance are also part of the village landscape. A memorial lime tree near the Church of St Giles is mentioned in a chronicle from 1717. The Slatinská lípa is officially designated as a protected memorial tree. Both references add a historical perspective to the landscape without separating nature from local history.

Church, chapel and traces of the past

The single-nave Church of St Giles was originally a Romanesque building from the first half of the 13th century. It received an extension in 1833 and was remodelled in the Baroque style before 1717. Together with its Romanesque origins and the 1833 extension, the church thus represents an architectural history in which medieval and Baroque influences have combined over several centuries. The Niche Chapel of St Anthony reflects a different era: it dates from the mid-19th century, has an elongated niche with a segmental-vaulted ceiling and is enclosed by a modern iron grille. The chapel is protected as a historic monument.

Horní Slatina Cemetery is also part of the historical orientation. It contains a cast-iron cross from the Bolíkov ironworks dating from 1836. Visitors to Horní Slatina Cemetery can park on the old road behind the bus stop. The nearest railway stations to Horní Slatina are Jemnice and Dačice.

The castle fortress of Horní Slatina

The castle fortress of Horní Slatina probably already existed around the middle of the 13th century. In 1589, it was mentioned as abandoned. Today, only faint terrain traces of the fortification are visible at the site. Those interested in local history will therefore not find a fully preserved complex here, but rather a historic place whose significance emerges from the recorded dates and the surviving traces.
