Horní Němčice between village history and landscape

Horní Němčice combines a vibrant culture of remembrance with distinctive landscape features. A monument from 1928, Tříhrázný Pond, located about one kilometre to the southeast, and a ridge on the European watershed give the village a range of different facets. A monument with Czech history

A monument erected in Horní Němčice in 1928 commemorates the tenth anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia and those who fell in the First World War. A bust of T. G. Masaryk can be seen in the upper part of the monument. The monument still stands in the village today, making part of its history immediately visible. This provides you with a clear cultural point of reference that can be combined with exploring the village, without reducing the place to a single attraction.

Pond, dams and watershed

Tříhrázný Pond lies about one kilometre southeast of Horní Němčice and has three dams. A local legend tells that a water goblin met the devil at what is now Tříhrázný Pond. Landscape and tradition are therefore closely linked here: the pond is both a specific landscape feature and a setting for local storytelling traditions.

Another distinctive feature is the ridge between the Studenský potok and Bolíkovský potok streams in Horní Němčice. It forms the most important European watershed between the Danube and Elbe. This geographical connection opens up an additional perspective on the surrounding area: alongside the individual pond, you can also discover the wider landscape structure of the village.

Traces of work and everyday life

Large granite quarries operated on the eastern slope of the Studenský potok in Horní Němčice. The quarry in Horní Němčice provided local residents with work and a livelihood. The history of quarrying therefore points not only to the rock and terrain, but also to the former everyday lives of the people who lived here.

One of the smaller but characteristic structures is a metal bell tower near house no. 5 in Horní Němčice. A niche chapel is also located north of the village.
