Týnec combines an impressive castle park with significant ecclesiastical art and the historic traces of Loreta. Those planning a trip with culture, short walks, and unusual discoveries will find very different facets here within a small thematic area: old trees and rare woody plants, a church with medieval and Renaissance details, and a former mining site that is now protected as a significant bat hibernation site in West Bohemia.

Castle Park with Rare Woody Plants

The park behind Zámek Týnec features a central avenue, extensive meadows, and an old, impressive stand of trees. Its special character arises not only from the open spaces but also from the variety of woody plants growing there. These include a Caucasian fir, a yellow-variegated yew, a plane tree, a red-leaved beech, columnar pedunculate oaks, and valuable old lime trees. For your trip planning, the park thus offers a clear contrast to Týnec’s religious and mining-history attractions: here, the established park landscape takes center stage.

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Historic Details

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Týnec dates back to the mid-14th century. In the second half of the 17th century, a tower, a sacristy, and an oratory gallery were added. Inside, there is a Gothic fresco of a kneeling knight in a 16th-century acanthus frame. A particularly precisely dated detail is the southern door: it is an inlaid Renaissance element from 1617 and bears the monograms of Jan and Alena z Wiederspergu.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary complex also includes the Kolovrat family crypt, the cemetery gate, and the cemetery’s enclosing wall. This means the church can be viewed not only as an individual building but as a historically cohesive site with several independent elements.

Loreta: Chapel, Ruins and Walking Route

Another historic trail leads to Loreta. The ruins of the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk date from the first half of the 18th century; today, only the chapel’s surrounding walls remain. The ruins can be reached from Týnec via a 1.5 km walking path. The Loretánská Chapel in Loreta can serve as the starting point for an approximately 1.5 km walk to the chapel ruins and back. Along the way, the route passes the upper and lower outlets of the Loreta tunnel, as well as a former hunting lodge.

The Loretánská Chapel itself also bears traces of history. It was reconstructed in the 1990s; the coats of arms of the Kolowrat and Vrbna families are located on its eastern façade. In this way, the walk combines architectural remains, a reconstructed chapel, and references to the history of the Loreta tunnel, without the individual stops merging into a single attraction.

The Štola Loreta and Its Natural Value

The Štola Loreta is protected as a natural monument. The portal of the lower entrance to the old Loreta mine bears the barely visible year 1889. The tunnel is particularly significant as a bat hibernation site, that is, a place where bats spend the cold season. It is considered the most important bat hibernation site in West Bohemia, particularly for greater mouse-eared bats, barbastelle bats, Daubenton’s bats, and brown long-eared bats.

Týnec as a Starting Point for Different Discoveries

A yellow-marked hiking trail passes through Týnec. Together with the 1.5 km walking path to the ruins of the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, it provides clear guidance for anyone who does not want to focus their stay exclusively on individual interiors or buildings. At the same time, the castle park and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary offer destinations in the town with a distinctly different character. If you are looking for accommodation in Týnec, you can therefore shape your trip around the park landscape, ecclesiastical art, historic ruins, and the protected natural monument of Štola Loreta.
