Ostružno combines tranquil landscapes with an unusually rich cultural history. The village lies in Kašperská vrchovina Nature Park and is the setting of the novel “Světák z Podlesí” by Karel Klostermann. Between deep forests and mountain meadows, historic buildings and small religious monuments, it forms a destination that does not need to be reduced to a single attraction. For families who like to combine nature with stories and visible traces of times gone by while on holiday, Ostružno therefore offers various points of connection.

Village Square, Chapel and Klostermann Traces

A prominent landmark in the village is the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on the Village Square. It dates from 1860. Below the chapel stands the former Karel Klostermann School, built in 1874 and now privately owned. Its former function and its literary connection with Klostermann give the village a historical dimension that is directly reflected in the local appearance, without Ostružno needing an urban backdrop.

At the end of Ostružno in the direction of Albrechtice stands a wayside shrine. Another small place of worship is located before Ostružno on the road from Sušice to Nezdice: in the niche chapel, a statue of the Virgin Mary stands in the niche on the front side. On the south side, a longer poem about unrequited love is attached to a wooden heart. It is precisely details like these that turn a journey through the landscape into a discovery with a cultural and personal character. The niche chapel also offers a beautiful view to the southeast.

Landscape Between Forests and Mountain Meadows

The surroundings of Ostružno are characterised by deep forests interspersed with mountain meadows. From the area around the village, views open across the inland and towards the Šumava Mountains of Ždánov and Javorník, both over 1,000 metres high. This creates two contrasting impressions: the forests and meadows give the landscape a sheltered, peaceful character, while the distant views lead beyond the immediate surroundings.

Those who are primarily looking for landscape experiences when planning their trip will find a different focus in this combination than in a cultural and historical discovery of the village. The chapel, wayside shrine, niche chapel and historic buildings are concrete points of interest in the vicinity of Ostružno; forests, mountain meadows and views of Ždánov and Javorník, on the other hand, shape the wider landscape. This distinction can be helpful when looking for accommodation: the decisive question is whether your stay should primarily take in the character of the village or the surrounding area with its landscape views.

Craft History at the Kokšovy Quarry

The history of local work is also part of Ostružno’s character. In 1874, small stone blocks began to be quarried at the Kokšovy quarry near Ostružno for the production of monuments. The reference to the quarry adds a craft dimension to the visible religious and literary evidence. Together with the U Pretlů farmstead, which probably dates from around the transition between the 18th and 19th centuries, Ostružno emerges as a place whose history has been passed down in various forms.

Ostružno as a Peaceful Starting Point for Discoveries

Ostružno is well suited as the theme of a trip focused not on a densely packed programme, but on the interplay between village history and landscape. A walk through the village can mentally connect the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the former school, the wayside shrine and traces of its literary heritage; outside the village centre, the niche chapel, the view to the southeast and the landscape of the nature park create their own accents. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh up the desired balance between a cultural and historical atmosphere and observing nature, without artificially separating the individual impressions from one another.
