Skapce – Baroque Church and Historical Traces
Skapce combines a highly visible Baroque church with an intricately interwoven monastic history and small historical details. The Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice forms a distinctive landmark in the surrounding area. The village is particularly interesting for travel planning if you would like to consider cultural history, sacred architecture and a documented cycling connection together in a single destination.
Skapce and Kladruby Monastery
Skapce was first mentioned in 1115 in the foundation charter of Kladruby Monastery. The connection with this monastery shaped the village’s history for centuries: Kladruby Monastery owned Skapce until the monastery was dissolved in 1785. This historical context makes the village a destination for travelers who want not only to view individual buildings, but also to understand the development of a village in connection with an important religious institution.
Baroque Church and Historic Rectory
The Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice is the focal point. The present-day church is the result of a Baroque renovation carried out under Kladruby abbot Amand Streer. Its interior decoration by the painter J. Kramolín was completed in 1788. With its frescoes and valuable period furnishings, the Baroque architecture is considered one of the most important Baroque buildings in the Tachov area. Skapce therefore offers a clear cultural focus that is also suitable for an outing with different interests within a travel group.
The rectory, built around 1720, stands directly next to the church. Until Kladruby Monastery was dissolved, it served as the abbots’ summer residence. As a high-quality Baroque building, it forms a valuable historic ensemble together with the neighboring church. The two buildings should therefore be viewed together: the church represents grand sacred architecture, while the rectory provides further insight into Skapce’s monastically shaped history.
Small Monuments and Another Sacred Building
Among the smaller but independently significant historical witnesses is the wayside shrine known as “Boží muka.” It dates from 1694 and consists of a granite base and shaft, a chapel-like superstructure and a stone cross. A small chapel dedicated to Saint Lawrence has also been preserved on the outskirts of Krtín. Both examples broaden the view of the region to include forms of religious folk and architectural culture beyond the large church.
