Kamenec brings together striking contrasts in nature, hiking trails, and a specific settlement and mining history. Rocky slopes shaped by steppe vegetation are part of the landscape, alongside meadows and wetlands in the floodplain of the Radnický potok stream. This brings a natural monument, trails and local history together for trip planning.

A natural monument between floodplain and steppe slope

The Kamenec Natural Monument was first placed under protection on February 27, 1954. The area includes a relatively well-preserved floodplain and drying steppe formations; both habitats support numerous plant and animal species. The meadow protected as the Kamenec Natural Monument also has a steep slope with dry grass and stones where lizards and slow worms bask in the sun.

For nature enthusiasts, the contrast is a useful point of reference: the floodplain and drying steppe formations represent different habitats, while the slope adds reptiles basking in the sun to the landscape. Kamenec is therefore not just a collection of individual natural features; the transition between wetter and drier areas also shapes the character of the area.

Hiking trails through Kamenec

Two trails with different focuses are relevant for hiking. The Okružní trasa Radnický potok circular trail passes through Kamenec and the valley of the stream of the same name. The Hylákův okruh educational trail also passes through Kamenec; the natural monument is one of its main attractions.

The difference is useful when choosing a trail based on your interests: the circular trail is described in terms of its route through the valley, while the natural monument is identified as a main attraction of the educational trail. The Kamenec natural area can be reached from Kamenec via the green-marked hiking trail or cycle route 352. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The settlement’s founding and mining history

The settlement of Kamenec was founded in 1760 by Baron Ledebour, owner of the Liblín estate. Kamenec was initially settled by German workers. This founding and the first settlement provide a specific starting point for the local history, which can be combined with the nature trails and protected area.

Early mining is also part of the history: coal-bearing rock was mined to produce alum and green vitriol. Traces of mining are still visible in the area around Kamenec. Along a route near Kamenec, a visibly more barren landscape reflects the former mining of pyrite shale for the production of sulfuric acid. A mining-shaped landscape near Kamenec provides a habitat for many rare beetle species. The mining evidence therefore ranges from the raw materials and products used to visible changes in the landscape.

Choose accommodation based on your travel interests

When looking for a hotel in Kamenec, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your stay. Would you like to prioritize the natural monument, floodplain and hiking trails, or also include the settlement’s origins and traces of mining?
