Malý Bor between Valley and History

Malý Bor lies west of Horažďovice in a gently rolling landscape, in the broad valley of the Mlýnský potok. The village combines a clearly structured settlement history with remarkable traces from the Middle Ages and the modern era. Those looking for a place in the Czech Republic with a connection to the landscape and tangible cultural monuments will find various ways to explore the local history here – from an old church and the remains of a former fortress to a historic farmhouse.

Historically, Malý Bor developed in two parts. The village centre lies on a southern slope above the stream; Kuchyňka, the second part of the village, is located on the other side of the stream. This spatial division is part of the character of the village and helps explain why the points of interest are not concentrated in a single building.

A Church with an Unusually Large Number of Historical Details

The Church of St Mary Magdalene stands at the centre of the local cultural monuments. It is situated on a slight elevation in Malý Bor and was probably built between 1200 and 1225. On the southern side of its tower, it preserves two medieval figurative wall paintings of archers. The church also contains a medieval stone baptismal font. The church is therefore interesting not only because of its age: its architectural history, wall paintings and baptismal font each offer their own view of the village's past.

Another trace leads back to 1902. At that time, a bronze hoard was discovered in Malý Bor, part of which is preserved in the museum in Horažďovice. The connection between the discovery site and the museum extends the local history beyond the immediate buildings. If you are interested in archaeological evidence, Malý Bor can thus be viewed together with Horažďovice as an additional cultural reference point, without equating the two places.

Fortress History, Kuchyňka and Farming Heritage

The history of the village is also marked by a violent turning point: Jan Žižka captured and burned down the fortress of Malý Bor on 12 October 1420. At the western end of Malý Bor, the remains of the former fortress complex, including traces of the moat, are visible. These remains bear witness to the former fortification, not to a present-day fortress. It is precisely the difference between the historical event and the remains that are still visible that makes the site interesting for anyone who wants to understand history not only through dates, but also through tangible traces.

In the second part of the village, Kuchyňka, the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk is one of Malý Bor's culturally and historically significant sites. In the village itself, the masonry farmhouse No. 17, with its historic black kitchen, adds an insight into rural architectural and everyday history. The parish church also preserves a remarkable detail: its surrounding wall contains a Late Gothic portal. Together, these sites do not form a single museum, but rather several independent points of connection for exploring Malý Bor.

Historical Routes and Travel Planning Today

Malý Bor was also situated on a historic trade route from Bavaria via Železná Ruda and Klatovy, which divided in the region. One of its branches led via Malý Bor and nearby Prácheň to České Budějovice. This connection places the village within a broader history of Bohemian routes and explains why its location is more than merely a landscape description.

Cycling is also one of the topics you can take into account when planning further: Malý Bor is one of the municipalities affected by the Otavská cycle trail. When choosing accommodation, this makes it possible to set a simple priority: either look for proximity to a place with a rich cultural and historical narrative, or focus your research more strongly on the combination of landscape, local history and cycling. The local sights give your stay a clear thematic direction without reducing Malý Bor to just one period.

Further destinations for your research: Čachrov, Nezdice Na Sumave, Kolinec, Ujčín, Hartmanice, Žihobce, Zavlekov, Domoraz.

To the overarching travel overview: Klatovy District.
