Lažany offers several ways to experience a trip: the village is laid out around an irregularly shaped village green, where two ponds are located. It also has a history linked to the castles of Volfštejn and Třebel, as well as nature and history themes along the Kosí potok nature trail. You can tailor your focus to the village layout, culture, and landscape according to your interests.

Village Green and Ponds

The layout of the village can be recognized by two specific features: Lažany is laid out around an irregularly shaped village green, and the two ponds are located on the green. Together, they describe the village’s basic layout rather than simply naming individual attractions. If you are interested in settlement patterns, this combination offers a distinct way to explore Lažany, alongside the history of its castles.

Castles and the History of Lažany

The village’s historical affiliation changed over time. In the second half of the 14th century, Lažany belonged to Volfštejn Castle; later, it was part of the estate of nearby Třebel Castle. This sequence in time gives the two castles different roles in the village’s history.

The ruins of Třebel Castle lie in the settlement of the same name, on a rocky promontory above the Kosí potok. Since 1958, the castle has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Volfštejn Castle was founded on a spur of Vlčí hora near Černošín. The two sites thus offer different historical and landscape connections, which you can explore separately if you are interested in the history of the surrounding area.

Nature Trail, Routes, and Nature

The Kosí potok nature trail is 8 km long and presents the nature and history of the Kosí potok valley. Its length gives you a practical basis for planning; in terms of content, the trail brings landscape and history together. Another route leads to Volfštejn Castle and continues to the summit of Vlčí hora. These routes therefore have different points of focus: the nature trail’s length and valley, and the summit as the destination on the route to the castle.

Another nature area of interest is Pod Volfštejnem Protected Area. It includes wet, waterlogged meadows with typical plant communities and numerous specially protected plant species. If you are particularly interested in plants and wetland habitats, this environment adds a distinct perspective on nature to the themes of hiking and castles.

Německý mlýn and Choosing Accommodation

The old Německý mlýn mill is located in Lažany, in the cadastral area of Lažany u Černošína. It is accessible by prior arrangement, so schedule your visit in advance. A 1713 revision of the Berní rula describes Německý mlýn as a mill with three wheels powered by a constant water supply. This historical entry adds a specific detail about the mill to the history of the village.

When choosing accommodation, you can decide whether to focus on the village layout, the history of the castles and estates, or nature and hiking. If you also want to visit Německý mlýn, remember to arrange your visit in advance.
