Hrádek between Castle History and Nature

A trip to Hrádek can be shaped around specific discoveries combining castle history, regional heritage and protected nature. Zámek Hrádek was probably converted from a medieval fortress into a Renaissance château after 1590. The medieval fortress and the later Renaissance château thus represent two construction phases of the same place. This development makes the site interesting for visitors who want to view historic architecture in the context of a longer local history.

Educational Trail, Castle Park and Special Experiences

The Naučná stezka Františka Pravdy educational trail in the castle park uses information panels to present the history of Zámek Hrádek and the municipality of Hrádek. The trail also focuses on historical gold mining on the Ostružná River. It thus connects the architectural history of the château and the local history of Hrádek with historical gold mining along the Ostružná. In this way, it links local history with a subject that goes beyond simply viewing the château.

There are further attractions around Zámek Hrádek, each with a different focus. The adventure golf course near Zámek Hrádek has 18 holes and combines traditional golf with elements of minigolf. Its obstacles are inspired by traditional golf. For families with younger children, the Zámecká herna pro děti is a dedicated activity: it is located in a former Baroque granary and is now a play area for children aged 2 to 9.

Crafts are also among the documented experiences in the surrounding area. Sklárna Liběnka glassworks includes a shop and a gallery. Visitors can watch a glassblower there working at a hot furnace to make blown and unblown glass pieces. The range of experiences thus extends from architectural and local history to an insight into practical glassmaking.

Churches in the Surrounding Area

The area around Hrádek adds significant religious buildings to the castle and craft themes. Kostel sv. Vavřince na Zdouni church was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style in the first half of the 13th century. Kostel Zvěstování Panny Marie ve Zbynicích church is of Romanesque origin and was built at the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century. The two churches differ in their historical character: Zdouni is Romanesque-Gothic, while Zbynice is of Romanesque origin. It was also once a popular pilgrimage site in the foothills of the Bohemian Forest. The historical status of this pilgrimage site explicitly belongs to the past.

Protected Nature North of Hrádek

The Zbynické rybníky nature reserve lies north of Hrádek in the Klatovy District. It protects a breeding area and a resting place for waterbirds. Alongside the castles, churches and cultural sites, this protected area provides a clear natural focus and broadens the possible travel interests to include the landscape and its birdlife.
